Nicolas Cage, "8MM" (1999)
There are so, so many crappy movies in Cage's oeuvre that it's sometimes hard to remember the superior flicks that made him an Oscar winner and a household name. "8MM" certainly isn't one of them. A dark, depressing attempt at noir, it turns a surveillance specialist's journey through the creepy world of snuff filmography into a cheesy, violent, vigilante movie. It's dank, poorly written, and certainly no showcase for Cage or the rest of the cast. No, it's just pure slumming for stars like Catherine Keener, James Gandolfini and Joaquin Phoenix, but it's Cage at the wheel, driving this stinker into a lake of cheese along with director Joel Schumacher. There's probably a movie to be made about this dark alley of the porn industry, but an exploitation movie about the ultimate exploitation is just an insult.
