2. "Pilot": First day of everything.
It is almost impossible to re-watch the pilot episode of "The Wonder Years" because it's just so seminal. It is everything. There's Kevin ditching his grade school sensibilities and trying to fit in with older kids. There's Paul introducing us to his eternal dorkiness. There are Kevin's parents and siblings in their exasperated averageness. There's sweet Winnie, whose older brother Brian is going off to Vietnam. And then there's Kevin and Winnie together after a terrible tragedy, discovering in one cinematic moment a glimpse of their future and a startling understanding of what it means to grow up. Perhaps this is the best pilot ever. I certainly can't think of a better one.
