Ex-porn stars, Bill Hader's farewell, Christoph Waltz as Jesus, and more
1) Goodbye, Stefon
The overall farewells for departing cast members Bill Hader and Fred Armisen were affecting in the season finale. But the farewell for Stefon, one of the show’s most consistently funny characters for the past half-decade, was nothing short of perfection. The actual segment on the “Weekend Update” set was perhaps the weakest in the character’s run, but was also entirely beside the point, serving as set-up for a payoff five years in the making. While applying “realism” to the world that Stefon inhabits seems silly, Seth Meyers’ frantic attempt to stop a wedding involving Stefon, Anderson Cooper, Ben Affleck (Stefon’s brother in his initial 2008 appearance), and nearly every type of partygoer mentioned in Stefon’s act over the years was funny, cinematic, and yes, almost emotional. Good recurring characters/ sketches work not because they simply refine themselves along the way, but evolve and transform. The Stefon/Meyers relationship grew over the course of Hader’s increasingly confident performances, giving this final interaction the weight of all that had come before it.
