'Star Trek,' 'The World's End,' 'Thor 2' ... and 'Metallica: Through the Never?'
The battle scene: A group of drones invade the hide-out of the human beings who are trying to wake up Tom Cruise's character to the truth about his identity and the nature of the aliens.
Why it was awesome: Joseph Kosinski has a great eye, even if I'm not sure he's got an equally great ear for performance or screenplay yet, but he takes these faceless drones and manages to make them genuinely menacing in this sequence. While you can name a dozen films that feel like they were part of the thematic spine of this film, a sequence like this is where Kosinski gets to just show off his chops as a filmmaker, and it's a genuinely tense and threatening chain of events that makes great use of geography. I may not like this work overall yet, but a scene like this suggests that Kosinski could knock one out of the park with the right material.
