"Bane of the Demon" (1998)
A three-years-later prequel to 1995's "Legacy," the four-part "Bane of the Demon" by writer Chuck Dixon is one of the best stories for illuminating Bane's brain as much as his brawn. But while things like his multilingualism or his eidetic memory (or his chess skills) are great character strokes, the narrative itself seemingly serves as something of a backstory for the events of "The Dark Knight Rises." To go into it much more than that would be to get really spoiler-y, but suffice it to say, this, not "Legacy," "Vengeance of Bane" or even "Knightfall," informed a lot of the character's disposition and past in the new film. (It was re-published in the recently released "Batman versus Bane" compilation, if you're on the hunt.)
