"The Long Halloween" (1996)

I think the Nolans and co-writer David Goyer have been inspired by Jeph Loeb's "The Long Halloween" throughout the trilogy. Carmine Falcone (played by Tom Wilkinson) sets the organized crime stage in "Batman Begins" while the trio of justice exemplified by Batman, Gordon and Dent (as well as Dent's gruesome transition to Two-Face) is a major point in "The Dark Knight." The latter even takes some visual cues from a few of artist Tim Sale's beautiful panels in Loeb's year-long epic. I'd even say the whole palette is significantly informed by the tone of Sale's work, in fact.
