Flowing right from "Vengeance of Bane" was the cross-title event "Knightfall." "The Dark Knight Rises" takes the story's concept of a battered Batman and morphs it with ideas in "The Dark Knight Returns" to ultimately pit an aging hero against a beastly evil. The new film doesn't use the freeing of Arkham inmates as prelude to Batman's weakened state, but there are echoes of that plot point in both the new film and in "Batman Begins." The signature moment of "Batman" #497 is, of course, a centerpiece moment in the new film, leaving room to explore some of the atmosphere of 1994's "Knightsend" as a result.
