"Batman" #1 (1940)

The first appearance of the Caped Crusader's arch nemesis the Joker came in the pages of "Batman" #1, approximately a year after Batman himself first stepped onto the scene in "Detective Comics" #27. Christopher Nolan and company always mentioned the book as an inspiration for the events and tone surrounding their spin on the character in "The Dark Knight." Whether it's the Joker's sneaky poisoning of Commissioner Loeb in the film or his moment of disguise as one of Gotham City's finest, much of the character's anarchic tactics and motivations stemmed from this story.

Great work on the list it really covers the batman stories integral to the framework of Nolan's films. I have only one further recommendation to add in that reguard and that is tales of the demon which covers a lot of the Ra's Al Ghul stories printed. Scott Snyder's final run on detective comics just before the reboot is also pretty amazing although not really relevant to Nolan's efforts. Also Gail Simone's 36 issue series of the Secret Six is a great read centered around a group of villains to which bane belongs.
