Best New Artist 1981: Though "Christopher Cross" may sound like the name of a former "American Idol" contestant, it in fact belongs to a goatee-sporting soft-rock singer who in 1981 reached the pinnacle of career success when his self-titled debut album went on to sell more than five million copies and even beat out Pink Floyd's "The Wall" (!) for Album of the Year at the Grammys. At the same ceremony he was also awarded Best New Artist over legendary rock group The Pretenders (!!), and later in the year he even took home an Oscar and a Golden Globe for singing the theme song to the hit Dudley Moore comedy "Arthur." In short, 1981 was a very, very good year for Christopher Cross. The rest of the years? Not so much.
