Best New Artist 1989: It's an exclusive club who can say their first single charted after performing at Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday tribute concert. In fact, it's a club of one — Tracy Chapman. Her song 'Fast Car' even ranked as the highest song on Billboard's '500 Greatest Songs Of All Time' to be written and performed by a female artist. Her music was thought-provoking, her message was progressive, and she was well-liked by the movers and shakers of the music industry.
