Inspired by actual events, Days of Darkness director\co-screenwriter Jake Kennedy's sophomore shocker tells the story of single mother Amelia (Marieh Delfino), who turns to stripping as a means of making ends meet and winds up the unwilling subject of a grim purification ritual. When sexy dancer Suzy takes a beating that leaves her unable to perform, she asks Amelia to cover her latest gig. Reluctantly accepting so her friend can convalesce, Amelia begins to grow uneasy when her driver (Tony Todd) taxis her to a dark and remote location. Once inside, Amelia finds herself imprisoned with a number of other unchaste women by a sadistic captor (Graham McTavish) who uses various torture methods to rid them of their impurities. Produced and co-written by Automaton Transfusion director William Clevinger, Penance also features Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer star Michael Rooker. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A new kind of horror film from South Korean filmmaker Kim Jin-Won
  • Sex and Fury - DVD

Type: Event | Date: Tuesday, Nov 24, 2009

This was the first of two films in which Japanese exploitation star Reiko Ike played the character of Inoshika Ocho. After a brief prologue depicting the murder of Ocho's policeman father, it is revealed that she has grown up to become a professional gambler. Sex & Fury chronicles Ocho's exploits as she searches for her father's killers, each identified by unique tattoos on their backs (a deer, a boar, and a butterfly). Along the way, she also crosses paths with Shonusuke (Masataka Naruse), a radical set on murdering prominent politician Kurokawa (Seizaburo Kawazu) and Christina (Christina Lindberg), an American spy posing as a gambler. The various storylines frequently intersect, prompting a dizzying array of plot twists, overheated sex scenes, and gory swordplay. The pulp-heavy storyline is skillfully directed by Norifumi Suzuki, a veteran director of commercial Japanese fare who pumped up such sexy, violent spectacles with surrealistic visual flourishes and stylized sets and costumes. Sex & Fury was followed by Female Yakuza Tale: Inquisition and Torture, a sequel helmed by another Japanese exploitation film legend, Teruo Ishii. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
  • Once Were Warriors - Blu-ray Disc

Type: Event | Date: Tuesday, Nov 10, 2009

This powerful drama was a major hit in its native New Zealand, outgrossing Jurassic Park in Kiwi cinemas. Jake and Beth Heke (Temurea Morrison and Rena Owen) are a couple of Maori descent who are living in a slum in Aukland. While it's obvious that they still love each other, Jake's alcoholism has driven a wedge into their relationship and has left their children emotionally scarred. Jake is charming while sober, but when drunk, he's a violent psychopath given to blink-of-an-eye mood changes and terrible cruelty against his loved ones. Liquor has also made it difficult for Jake to hold onto a job, leaving him dependent on the dole to feed his family. Nig (Julian Arahanga), Jake's oldest son, has turned his back on his father and joined a gang of Maori youths whose initiation rituals include tattooing and torture. Jake's 13-year-old daughter Grace (Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell) prefers to spend her time with her drug-addicted boyfriend -- rather than stay home and fight off the advances of her father's friends. And Boogie (Taungaroa Emile) ends up in juvenile hall when Jake's drinking prevents him from going to court to speak on Boogie's behalf. Once Were Warriors was based on an acclaimed novel by Alan Duff. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
  • Gothika - DVD

Type: Event | Date: Tuesday, Nov 3, 2009

A woman is taken on a voyage to the other side of sanity in this moody thriller. Dr. Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) is a clinical psychologist who works alongside her husband, Dr. Doug Grey (Charles S. Dutton), in the mental ward of a top security prison, where Miranda has been devoting much of her attention to a clever but deeply disturbed murderer named Chloe (Penélope Cruz), who shares gruesome tales of torture and violence that may or may not be based in fact. One night, Miranda has a hideous nightmare in which a chance meeting with a strange young girl leads to a terrifying journey into madness. Once she wakes, however, Miranda discovers that the real horror has just begun -- Doug has been brutally murdered, and the evidence points to Miranda as the prime suspect. She soon finds herself a patient in the same facility where she once treated others, and finds that her claims of innocence and sanity do little to convince Dr. Pete Graham (Robert Downey Jr.), the psychologist assigned to her case. Gothika marked the American debut of acclaimed and controversial French filmmaker Mathieu Kassovitz. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
  • The Butcher - DVD

Type: Event | Date: Tuesday, Oct 27, 2009

Emerging South Korean filmmaker Kim Jin-Won takes a cue from the "torture porn" horror sub-genre propagated by such controversial shockers as Hostel and Saw for this first-person frightener centering on a group of sadistic snuff film producers and the unwilling stars of their most recent production. The action begins as a handful of people awake bound and bloodied on the floor of a dilapidated slaughterhouse, their captors casually discussing the bloody mayhem that is about to unfold. It seems that overseas audiences are hungering for films that feature Koreans killing one another in a variety of inventive ways, and these producers are prepared to make a killing by catering to the growing demand for senseless violence. Each of the "actors" has been outfitted with a head-mounted video camera, their terror conveyed in immediate and unequivocal terms as they struggle to find an escape from the horrors of this dark abattoir. As the terror intensifies, the viewer experiences the scene from both the head-mounted cameras that have been placed on the actors, and the filmmaker's cameras as well. Later, a married couple is dragged mercilessly into the Butcher's blood-soaked chamber and the husband is forced to partake in a dehumanizing game of death that pits his love for his spouse directly against his survival instincts. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
