  • Rethink Afghanistan - DVD

Type: Event | Date: Tuesday, Nov 10, 2009

While the U.S.'s 2001 invasion of Afghanistan was seen as an imperative after the attacks of 9/11, the ongoing conflict has seen a massive drop in public support and a questioning of whether military force can solve the struggling nation's social, political, and economic problems. This documentary from filmmaker Robert Greenwald (Uncovered: The War on Iraq) calls for a de-escalation of the war in Afghanistan in favor of non-military solutions and makes its case through rarely seen news footage and interviews with foreign-policy experts such as Andrew Bacevich, Stephen Kinzer, and Tariq Ali. ~ All Movie Guide
  • Hempsters: Plant the Seed - DVD

Type: Event | Date: Tuesday, Nov 17, 2009

Filmmaker Michael Henning details the efforts of seven activists in challenging the United States government to legalize industrial hemp so that we might cease reliance on foreign oil, conserve our forests, and discover more efficient forms of energy. Across the world, over 30 countries rely on industrial hemp to fulfill their agricultural needs. In America, however, hemp is associated so closely with marijuana that lawmakers are afraid to touch the topic lest they be seen as opponents of the war on drugs. Back in 1996, actor and environmental activist Woody Harrelson planted four feral hemp seeds in Kentucky, challenging state law and risking jail time simply to raise public awareness about the many benefits hemp. He was eventually acquitted, though the high-profile trial that followed drew exactly the kind of attention to the cause that Harrelson had hoped for. In this documentary, Harrelson, Ralp Nader, Willie Nelson, Julia "Butterfly" Hill, Merle Haggard, and others voice legitimate concerns about the reasoning behind maintaining the ban on industrialized hemp, while illustrating the many potential benefits of reconsidering our current laws. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
  • Charlestón - DVD

Type: Event | Date: Tuesday, Nov 10, 2009

Taking its title from the dance craze of the era, this routine, 1920s romantic comedy stars Mexico's popular Silvia Pinal as Beatriz, a woman whose troubles are brought on by the fact that she has two wildly different suitors. Her fiancé (Pastor Serrador) is a well-placed, cultured though timid individual with an interest in modern abstract art. Her other boyfriend (Alberto Closas) is a macho playboy type and, needless to say, the two men do not appreciate each other's claims on Beatriz. This classic triangle leads to the expected confrontations, misunderstandings, and requisite moments of romance. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
