Hoping for good word of mouth, he bends over backwards to please his new guest, Lord Melbury (Michael Gwynn). Basil also finds himself receiving the unwanted romantic attentions of one Mrs. Peignoir (Yvonne Gilan), an antiques dealer also staying at the hotel. Basil's overactive imagination leads to a great deal of confusion between himself and his guests, which isn't helped at all when Manuel (Andrew Sachs) ties one on for his birthday. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide Fawlty Towers: Basil the Rat When the health department gives the Fawlty Towers kitchen a surprise inspection, Basil (John Cleese) is informed that the sanitation is far below acceptable standards and is given 24 hours to get the place ship-shape. Basil assigns his staff to give the kitchen a thorough cleaning, but when he goes looking for Manuel (Andrew Sachs), he discovers the waiter has been keeping his pet rat in the kitchen. Manuel insists the animal is a Siberian hamster, but Basil knows the truth and demands he get rid of it. Manuel gives the rat to Polly (Connie Booth), but instead of taking it home, she stashes it in a storage shed in the back; the rat soon finds its way back into the hotel, with Basil hot on its trail. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide Fawlty Towers: The Kipper and the Corpse Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) gets a cut-price deal on some kippers which were well past their sell-by date. Shortly after they're served with breakfast at the Fawlty Towers dining room, one of the guests dies, and Basil is certain a spoiled kipper was to blame. While a doctor assures Basil the kippers didn't cause the man's death, now Basil and Manuel (Andrew Sachs) have to hide the body from the guests -- and come up with an excuse for his absence when the late diner's friends stop by for a visit. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide Fawlty Towers: The Anniversary Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) and his wife Sybil (Prunella Scales) are about to celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary, and Basil is planning a party with all their friends. But Basil wants to surprise Sybil, so he pretends he doesn't know of any important date coming up. Basil's ruse fools Sybil all too well; she's certain he's forgotten and storms off shortly before the guests are due to arrive. To save face, Basil tells the assembled well-wishers that Sybil is upstairs in bed, having fallen ill; when several of them want to say hello to her, Basil must convince Polly (Connie Booth) to disguise herself as Sybil.
