  • Holiday Family Collection: Polar Express/Happy Feet/A Christmas Story

Type: Event | Date: Tuesday, Oct 6, 2009

Includes:A Christmas Story (1983), MPAA Rating: PG The Polar Express (2004), MPAA Rating: G Happy Feet (2006), MPAA Rating: PG A Christmas Story Nine years after the Yuletide slasher flick Black Christmas, Porky's director Bob Clark once again took on the holiday genre, switching from gasps to laughs with A Christmas Story. Adapted from a memoir by humorist Jean Shepherd (who narrates), the film centers on Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), a young boy living in 1940s Indiana, desperately yearning for a Red Rider BB gun for Christmas. Despite protests from his mother (Melinda Dillon) that he'll shoot his eye out, Ralphie persists, unsuccessfully trying to enlist the assistance of both his teacher and Santa Claus. All the while, Ralphie finds himself dealing with the constant taunts of a pair of bullies and trying to not get in the middle of a feud between his mother and father (Darren McGavin) regarding a sexy lamp. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide The Polar Express Directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on children's author Chris Van Allsburg's modern holiday classic of the same name, The Polar Express revolves around Billy (Hayden McFarland), who longs to believe in Santa Claus but finds it quite difficult to do so, what with his family's dogged insistence that all of it, from the North Pole, to the elves, to the man himself, is all just a myth. This all changes, however, on Christmas Eve, when a mysterious train visits Billy in the middle of the night, promising to take him and a group of other lucky children to the North Pole for a visit with Santa. The train's conductor (Tom Hanks) along with the other passengers help turn Billy's crisis in faith into a journey of self-discovery. A long-time fan of Van Allsburg's book, Hanks also helped produce the film. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide Happy Feet In the world of the emperor penguin, a simple song can mean the difference between a lifetime of happiness and an eternity of loneliness. When a penguin named Mumble is born without the ability to sing the romantic song that will attract his soul mate, he'll have to resort to some fancy footwork by tap dancing his way into the heart of the one he loves. Directed by Babe mastermind George Miller, Happy Feet tells the tale of one penguin's quest for love, and features an all-star cast of vocal talent that includes Robin Williams, Hugh Jackman, Elijah Wood, Nicole Kidman, and Brittany Murphy. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

It soom becomes obvious, however, that Gloria is a scheming vixen, who worms her way into the affections of the WJM station manager in hopes of taking over Sue Ann's daily TV show. But the Happy Homemaker proves equal to the challenge with a culinary revenge that is both "sweet" and entirely in character. The connivingly ambitious Gloria Munson is played by Linda Kelsey, who latter appeared as journalist Billie Newman on the MTM-produced series Lou Grant. "A New Sue Ann" originally aired on October 26, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide The Mary Tyler Moore Show: Lou and That Woman Sheree North makes the first of two series appearances as nightclub singer Charlene Maguire. Having fallen hard for the sexy and personable Charlene, Lou Grant (Ed Asner) is willing to overlook her several former marriages and her romantic liaisons with the rich and famous. But Lou becomes extremely self-conscious and reluctant when Murray (Gavin MacLeod) and Ted (Ted Knight) begin giving him the needle about dating a woman "with a history." The 100th episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, "Lou and That Woman" was originally telecast on October 5, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide The Mary Tyler Moore Show: Neighbors With Lou Grant (Ed Asner) still melancholy over the breakup of his marriage, Mary (Mary Tyler Moore) suggests that he'd feel better if he sold his house and moved into a smaller place. As usual, Mary's helpful advice backfires when Lou rents an apartment in her own building. This episode represented one of the first directorial assignments for frequent Mary Tyler Moore Show scriptwriter James Burrows -- but not the last, not by a long shot. "Neighbors" originally aired on December 7, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide The Mary Tyler Moore Show: The Outsider Richard Masur guest stars as Bob Larson, an outspoken young consultant who has been brought in by station management to pep up the ratings of "The Six O'Clock News." Problem is, the news staff has done nothing right in the past according to Larson, and apparently will never be able to do anything right in the future. This episode is capped by a touching display of solidarity from the men and women of the newsroom -- though the viewer knows full well that they'll be on each other's nerves again by the time the next episode rolls around. "The Outsider" first aired on October 12, 1974. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide The Mary Tyler Moore Show: Will

~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide The Mary Tyler Moore Show: Will
  • Dumb and Dumber/Dumb and Dumberer - DVD

Type: Event | Date: Tuesday, Sep 15, 2009

Includes:Dumb and Dumber (1994), MPAA Rating: PG-13 Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003), MPAA Rating: PG-13 Dumb and Dumber Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels play the title roles (though viewers may find themselves debating which is which) in this genially low-brow comedy. Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) are two intellectually-challenged best friends who share an apartment so messy that gangsters aren't sure how to trash the place; the guys also have a certain problem (not difficult to understand) holding on to jobs. Lloyd is working as a limo driver in Rhode Island when he picks up a beautiful and wealthy woman named Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly) who is being taken to the airport. Lloyd immediately falls head over heels in love with Mary, and when she leaves a briefcase at the airport, he's determined to return it in hopes of impressing her. Lloyd isn't able to get aboard Mary's flight (though not for lack of trying). Harry has a van decorated to look like a dog (to promote his failing dog-grooming business), and the pair hop in the Poochmobile to find Mary in Aspen. What Lloyd and Harry don't know is that the briefcase is full of money, which Mary deliberately left at the airport as a ransom payment to save the life of her kidnapped husband. Incidentally, Lloyd's chipped front tooth happens to be real; while Jim Carrey had the injured tooth capped many years ago, he thought a broken smile would suit Lloyd's character and had the cap removed for the duration of filming. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd Director Troy Miller follows up the little-seen Mr. Show movie Run Ronnie Run! with this prequel to Dumb and Dumber, the 1994 box-office smash that starred Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels and launched the careers of writer/directors Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly. For the follow-up, we're taken back to 1986 when Lloyd Christmas (Eric Christian Olsen) and Harry Dunne (Derek Richardson) first met while in high school. Dissatisfied with their being stuck in remedial classes, the dense duo sets out to prove that they can attend classes with their peers of normal intelligence. Along the way, they encounter a greedy principal played by Eugene Levy and a friendly janitor played by Luis Guzman who takes Lloyd under his wing. Along with Mimi Rogers as Harry's mom, Mrs. Dunne, Dumb and Dumberer also features performances by Rachel Nichols and Cheri Oteri. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide
