"Anna Karenina" looks rather obnoxious, messy, madly incoherent, and gorgeous, so it's absolutely an in. A year where Spielberg has a dramatic feature is never a year he is overlooked. This year will not be the start of that, but it might bring about something that is genuinely spectacular. I have a good feeling about "Lincoln". "Les Miserables" is right up their alley, and people are bound to love it and absolutely devour it. This could be the rousing success story of the season. Whether or not it wins the top prize depends entirely on insecurity regarding giving a director consecutive wins. Everyone is loving "Beasts of the Southern Wild", so I expect that will be a major presence in the season. I share your heightened interest in "Argo", and think that one could find its way into the lower ranks of the nominations. That's judgment on Academy interest, and not the film. "The Master" feels like something that could rise up and blow us away, demanding a nomination at the least. Or it could be something that the Academy just doesn't want to touch, because it's so radical. I have an odd feeling about "Life of Pi". It could be rather great, but not in the Academy way. Or it could be a lot like "Hugo" in terms of visual spark. That's the way it's currently reading. Feels like a passion project for Ang Lee. "The Great Gatsby" just feels like the sort of thing that will capture the Academy interest fantastically, or at least enough for a nomination. "Django Unchained" could go either way, depending on if it's anything further than a fantastic romp. If it's just a fantastic romp, that's fine for us, but not the Academy. Outside those, I truly can't say yet. |

You know I'm really thinking hard from the titles that I've seen recently and I cannot for the life of me think of even one that I saw that if I were nominating or voting, I would put into Oscar contention. Sure upcoming films yet to be released before awards season (read: movies strategically released so they're fresh for awards season) look good but simply on a trailer, a cast list or early buzz I can't make an educated decision until I really see them in their entirety. |

I'm so happy that everybody put Marion Cotillard on his wish list for a best actress nomination in her "Rust and Bone" amazing and beautiful performance. I have NEVER been touched in my entire life by foreign performance the way Marion made me feel after seeing the movie during my holiday in Paris. I still think about her 5 weeks later.. |
