Interview: 'Doctor Who' star Matt Smith, Part 2
On the Doctor's companions, the franchise's legacy, and more

As I explained in part 1 of this interview post, the new season of "Doctor Who" debuts on BBC America Saturday night at 9 with an episode set in, and that was partially filmed in, America. I went to BBC America's offices last week to interview three of the show's stars, including the Doctor himself, Matt Smith, and will be posting my videos of those chats over the next few days.
In part 2, Smith and I (each with a hoarse voice for an entirely different reason; his is better than mine) talk about the Doctor's feelings about Amy Pond's husband (and new full-time companion) Rory, about being part of the "lost generation" in the UK that grew up without new "Doctor Who" episodes, and a lot more.
Enjoy. Back tomorrow with Alex Kingston, then Karen Gillan on Friday and a review of the premiere Saturday night after it airs on the East Coast.

April 20, 2011 at 1:26PM EST Reply to CommentSorry Alan, you sound much better than Matt Smith. I love it when you say, "don't worry you'll rally," as if you were really saying, "buck up wimpy actor, you just have the toughest acting gig on British television."

April 20, 2011 at 2:17PM EST Reply to CommentThe quality of the video goes in and out. Some times the picture and the voices are really clear (regardless of the extent to which people have lost their voices) and at other times they are fuzzy. The volume on the video is low I had to turn my speakers all the way up to hear the interview at a decent level and even then I could have used more volume. Alan you voice was great and Matt Smith's voice was tinier than a mouse's voice it was barely beyond a whisper.
I also wish that Hitfix interviewers would be shown on screen. The current perspective seems like the camera is asking the subject questions and that lends an air of objectivity or equivalence of the critics voice to the audience that I find to be an entirely wrong technique. The interviewer should be seen as a subject of the view lens just like the interviewee so we can see that the conversation is just as subjective as between any two people.
I really like the choice of video interviews I hope we see more particularly in the upcoming TCAs!
sepinwall The sound quality has more to do me with being on the road to recovery and Matt still having a wrecked voicebox than anything to do with the camera, I think. But in general, blame the technical difficulties on me using a FlipCam for the second time ever.
April 20, 2011 at 2:38PM ESTAlso, putting us both in frame would require an additional person to be there to film it, and we don't have the manpower for that.

April 20, 2011 at 7:32PM EST Reply to CommentGreat interview Alan! You really got some great stuff out of him. I notice a lot of formerly print based journalists don't translate well to filmed media, but you were great. Can't wait to see the other two interviews.
And OMG, you met the DOCTOR!!!!

The sad lack of Rory aside, great interview; thanks, Alan! (And hilarious at the end.)

April 23, 2011 at 12:58PM EST Reply to CommentGreat interviews, Alan. Only discovered this show after reading a few of your reviews and stumbled onto a marathon of Season 5 last year, and my Xmas holidays were spent catching up on Eccelston and Tennant's seasons. Great TV!
