TV's Top 10 of 2010 from The Fien Print

Vampires, lions, mobsters and terriers... Oh my!

If you're reading this post and watching this video, chances are that you love television. Or, at the very least, I'd say that chances are that you *like* television.

And if that's the case, if you're the kind of person who likes television enough to take it seriously and to enjoy discussing it, you've probably gotten into one of those conversations where somebody tries telling you that they hate TV or where they try telling you that there's nothing to watch on TV, or where they try proving they're "aware" of the TV landscape by suggesting that their dislike for TV stems not from the medium itself, but from the proliferation of reality TV which has, if you trust certain people, led directly to the demise of all things quality and scripted on the small screen.

While you might be prone to obscenities when speaking with such people, you could also just walk away with a simple, "You're a ridiculous fool" (or "troll," if the conversation is taking place online).

I'm not going to try convincing you that we're in the middle of the same so-called TV Golden Age that we were in in the mid-00s when "The Sopranos" and "The Wire" and "Deadwood" and "Arrested Development" and "Lost" and "The Shield" were delivering dozens of hours of new TV every year.

But I'll say, without hesitation, that all 10 of the shows in my Top 10 are shows that I love, shows that I feel a passionate need to support and defend. My loosely sketched Top 10 Movies of 2010 list doesn't include more than four or five films I feel that level of devotion to.

I didn't cheat on my Top 10. There are exactly 10 shows for 10 positions. But I cheated a little on the Second 10, a list that'll post tomorrow or the next day. That list will contain a couple more than 10 slots because it turns out that there are more than 20 shows on TV that I adore. And even after cheating a tiny bit, my list excluded recent Emmy favorites, TCA Award winners and shows with rabid fanbases that are sure to be unhappy with me (especially when a couple of those shows pop up in my 10 Worst gallery later this week).

Including this video and my Second 10, my Best of 2010 package (slightly less inclusive than Sepinwall's) includes exactly one season of one reality show, plus one nonfiction program. That means at least 20-ish scripted programs made my list. Again, don't let anybody tell you that reality has made it impossible to find quality scripted programming on TV. I don't care if you don't love all 20 of the scripted shows on my list. To each their own. But if you *hate* all 20, that's a problem and it isn't my problem.

Don't let anybody tell you there are no good comedies on TV. I've got two in my Top 10 and four or five more that'll make my next grouping.

In fact, don't let anybody tell you that TV is lacking in good examples of almost *any* genre. In my Top 20-ish, I've got thrillers, period pieces, action shows, a sports drama, a sports documentary series, a couple stellar entries from the miniseries/made-for-TV field, a PI mystery, a teenage soap about vampires and werewolves, plus a complicated social drama that brings together music, food and a portrait of one of America's great cities. You want it? You can find it on the small screen.

Everything good is on cable and there's nothing good on network TV? Well, I'll grant that only four of my Top 10 will have aired on a broadcast network this year, but that number expands significantly when I stretch into my Top 20-ish.

Anyway, enough of me being defensive. It's just that I'm generally a rather huge snob. You know this about me, dear readers. And if I can find more than 20 shows I love on TV, there probably ought to be one or two shows out there for everybody.

I feel pretty solid about this list. The gap between the bottom five shows on this Top 10 and some of the shows in my Second 10 is fairly small. The gap between the top two shows and everything else on the list is fairly wide.

Enjoy my Top 10 (Much credit to HitFix's Alex Dorn for the editing!)... Stay tuned for the Second 10 in the days to come.

I rewatched "The Suitcase" and "One Minute" the other day. It's so hard for me to choose which was the best show this year.
Aaron Paul's hospital bed monologue(s) vs. Jon Hamm breaking down after confirming Anna's death?
Peggy and Don holding hands for a brief moment at the end of the episode vs. Hank finally opening up to his wife about his PTSD?
The masterful ending of Don leaving the door open vs. the haunting ending of Hank and the Cousin's lying on blood-stained asphalt while car alarms drone on?
Whatever show is picked for number 1 or 2, I think we can all agree on one thing: AMC rocks.

dan Velocity Known - I could have reversed 'em and felt just as solidly with the alternative order and I can't say for sure that the final order wasn't at least somewhat a product of which came first and which went second. Two great shows, two great seasons...

dan ShadowStorm4Life - I already scooped the video with the podcast on Monday... Figured I'd maintain the video's value... My Second 10, posting tomorrow or Thursday, will be All Text All The Time!

    Razorback

You selected the best scene in the entire MAD MEN run... and while I loved your video and your comments, in that moment I wished I could have muted you so I could hear every single utterance of that brilliant scene. Anyway, loved what you did. I would have tossed in BORED TO DEATH and left off THE PACIFIC (I did like it, though) but I am fine with your list.

dan Razorback - I stop talking in time, though, right? I mean, you miss the beginning of the conversation, but you get the superb back-and-forth at the end. And closing the video on Hamm's line? Love it. Kudos, again, to Alex Dorn, who edited the sucker...

Razorback No doubt. As a quasi editor, I was very impressed by the video. It was as good as any of those television review shows. And your comments, as always, were thoughtful and accurate. But then I am already a fanboy of yours so... it goes without saying I would love it.

    • Aw shucks, thanks! The best part of cutting these videos is discovering new stuff to watch/listen/buy, etc. Believe me, I still have Melinda's top ten singles playing over and over again in my head! and now I have to see "The Pacific"! it looks amazing.

    Good list Dan.

I think the beauty of the specialty cable shows is that they only run 10 - 13 episodes a season. That lets them focus on season arcs with few throwaway episodes like network TV. Lost was able to trim down their seasons and that made it a stronger show (despite the terrible conclusion).

Case in point: I've been slogging through season 2 of Supernatural and wish their seasons were only 13 episodes long so they could focus on their main series arc. Same applies to Fringe.

dan Mulderism - It's funny, because the 13-episode cable method either lets shows use smaller writing staffs, plan out everything more carefully and arc things more tightly, or it gives shows the latitude to fly by the seats of their pants as "Breaking Bad" apparently did for much of this season. I wish there were a way to make the model work for networks, for them to get actual financial value out of annual 13 episode seasons of things like "Kings" or "Lone Star." So instead you get the less effective stand-alone episodes of shows like, as you said, "Supernatural" or "Fringe," episodes that often get in the way of the more impressive mythology episodes, but are necessary to fill out a 22 episode order... Such is the nature of the business, though...

fred Although, I strongly feel that Supernatural is one of the best shows on TV, and has been for a few years now.

Seriously, with the way they've managed to deliver one excellent season after the other, and how they've handled their mythology and everything, especially during the last couple of years, it's truly a great show that deserves to be on a Top 10 list.

I have never ever thought to watch any of shows from this top 10. Actually I watched Breaking Bad 1st season, but stopped at the Season 2. And tried Mad Men early seasons, but wasn't impressed. I personally enjoy Rubicon, Castle, The Mentalist, intrigued by Fringy (you never know what a weird twist of fantasy Abrams has in his pocket, doesn't matter how silly it can be), Dexter (that is weaker, than the first season that is obvious for any adaptation of a book when it takes off of it), NCIS (mostly for keeping the original style), The Event and V (a little). I am not sure if this difference made me good or bad. And I am sorry to saying that I enjoy movies of Fellini, Coppola, Scorsese, Bergman, Tarkovsky, Antonioni, Jarmusch, Bertolucci... Yeah, definitely, bad... Sorry again.

Kir Oops, I oversaw Boardwalk Empire that I am going to watch. The only in top 10.

dan Kir- A couple of those shows you mentioned are going to be in my Second 10... And really, my only point was that the current TV landscape has something for everybody, so if you have shows you enjoy, even if they don't happen to be my favorites, that's awesome!

Thank you for being one of the only critics to recognize The Vampire Diaries. It's so easy to dismiss as shallow teen fare based on its title and network, but the show continually surprises me with just how good it can be. The next few weeks waiting for its (and my beloved Parks & Rec's) return is gonna be hell.

I don't watch all on your list but I am glad to see how inclusive it is. Many ignore shows like TVD or documentaries when selecting Top 10.

Loved your list. BB and MM are spectacular. To quote Community's Dean Pelton, "TV's gotten crazy good." BTW, I just had to ask this, what do u think bout january jones' performance on mad men? I for one think she's grossly under-appreciated by critics and the audience alike.
