Who's the top seller of 2010 so far? Hint: It's not Eminem
How much worse are sales from the first six months of 2009?
Who has ruled the charts for the first six months of 2010? Country superstars Lady Antebellum.
It’s looking like a royally good year for Lady Antebellum. At the half-way mark, the country act’s second album “Need You Now” is the top seller of 2010 so far, registering sales of more than 2, 355,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album remains a strong seller and stands at No. 10 this week on the Billboard 200 23 weeks after its release.
The leading digital track is the all-star charity sing-along “Hope for Haiti,” according to Billboard, although it did not supply sales figures.
But neither was enough to halt the sales slide. Album sales in the U.S. dropped 8.2% for the first half of 2010 from the first six months of 2009 to 213.7 million units.
Track sales were also down from the corresponding time period. They fell only 0.2% for 597.4 million, but the message is much more daunting as, until recently, the music industry hoped that digital sales would save the business. Putting a positive spin on it, many pundits feel the drop may be a temporary reaction to iTunes’ increasing prices .30 cents to $1.29 to download hit songs.
In slightly brighter news, while physical album sales continued to drop (down 17.9%); digital album sales rose 12.7%. Physical CDs still account for around 60% of overall album sales, although that number continues to fall.

July 8, 2010 at 3:55AM EST Reply to CommentIt's because Em's album has been out an entire 2 weeks. And it's already platinum. By the end of 2010, Recovery will be the highest selling album of the year. Ma'am, did you write this story because you don't like eminem? Because it seems kind of pointless to point out, right about the time Eminem is dominating, that lady antebellum has sold more in 23 weeks than he has in 2.
July 8, 2010 at 5:31AM EST Reply to CommentI gotta agree with Jake, its like the only reason you bothered to write the article is to rain on the Eminem parade or summin. But I'm gonna go ahead and open an umbrella with some quick facts you tried to side step
1. Em broke their first week sales record
2. Em's album just came out and is platinum, whereas this album has been available for most of the year
3. Em's album is already platinum and projected to be #1 again next week, with sales exceeding 200,000
Overall, by the end of the year Em's album will more then likely have a higher sales total then this album. But I doubt you'll be writing a similar headline that reads "Guess who outsold lady Antebellum?? Here's a hint, its Eminem"
Less Bias in your writing would be appreciated, especially when your suppose to be writing facts

melinda Love that y'all just assume I'm such an Eminem hater. I'm actually quite a fan, as you'd know if you read some of my past posts about Em and the fact that he keeps landing on my Music Power Rankings ever week. Also love Lady A. Simply a story about what's sold so far this year and I knew that even though Lady A has only fallen out of the Top 10 once in 23 weeks, everyone's eyes are on Em, so they might be surprised. Shockingly, it's not all about putting down Em.
July 8, 2010 at 3:27PM ESTAndrew--please let me know where I didn't pay attention to the facts. You are very likely right that Em may have the top selling album of the year, but it's WAY too early to call that race yet.
Most importantly, thanks for reading!
