Sugar Ray and Wallflowers return with new albums and tours
Check your calendars. It's looking a lot like the ‘90s lately.
Sugar Ray will release its first album in six years when the perfectly named "Music for Cougars" comes out July 21.
It's been a decade since Sugar Ray's radio heyday, but such hits as "Fly" and "Every Morning" still receive frequent airplay on Hot Adult Contemporary stations. They aren't the only mid-90s making news this week The Wallflowers, famous for such tunes as "One Headlight," "6th Ave. Heartache," and "The Difference," are reuniting for a summer tour that kicks off June 16 at House of Blues, Anaheim (Calif.)
The new album came about after Pulse Records' head Josh Abrahams suggested the band, which contains all its original members, go back into the studio and cut an album for his Universal-distributed label, according to Billboard. Guests on the album include Weezer's Rivers Cuomo, Josh Freese, and Donovan Frankenreiter.
First single, the upbeat "Boardwalk," comes out in mid-May.
Lead singer Mark McGrath, who's ventured into other entertainment areas, such as hosting "Extra" is an engaging frontman, in part, because he embraces his limitations, such as his raspy voice, instead of denying them.
Plus, he seems to inherently understand that the band's luck and hard work have gotten them further than talent.
"I know people aren't sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for a Sugar Ray record. But that wasn't the point. It was purely because we love to make music," he tells Billboard. "We're not going anywhere. All of us have tried to sabotage the band one way or another. But some divine intervention has kept this band together and I think we all appreciate that. I think the biggest success of Sugar Ray is that after 21 years and all the booze, drugs women, money, having no money - all those things have come into play and we're still together. That, to me, is the biggest reward."
The CD will be supported by a tour that starts July 24 at Dakota Magic Casino.
Similarly, the Wallflowers will tour in support of a new greatest hits, which includes two previously unreleased tracks.
