Listen: New Bon Jovi single 'We Weren't Born to Follow'
New Jersey band tells Americans to snap out of it
Bon Jovi
Bon Jovi has made a very successful career of creating big anthemic arena rockers that critics love to hate and the masses slurp up like their favorite ice cream flavor.
With new single, "We Weren't Born to Follow," Jon Bon Jovi & Co have hit a line drive straight into the Red State bleachers. "We Weren't Born To Follow" is a rallying cry for these recessionary times; an uptempo song that kicks us in the butt and reminds us that we Americans aren't a nation of whiners, we're a nation of winners!!!
Tell me this lyric doesn't make you want to punch your buddy in the arm, grab a Budweiser and shout, "Damn straight, Jon, you pretty boy!": We weren't born to follow, c'mon and get up off your knees/When life is a bitter pill to swallow, you gotta hang on to what you believe..."
Seriously, it's that formulaic and the band is capable of creating so much better (and has for more than 25 years), but it's also that irresistible. After only two listens, the song was already embedded in my head like a hook in a trout's mouth.
"Follow" is not going to be a radio hit like the fabulous "Who Says You Can't Go Home" was (and doesn't deserve to be), but we bet you it will be used by the NFL for commercials and there's a Chevy Truck television ad with an American flag waving in the background in this song's future. Heck, we wouldn't be surprised if Fox News even tries to license it, despite Bon Jovi's awowed love for Obama. Plus, in concert, the crowd will go crazy during the "Let me hear you say, 'yeah, yeah, yeah'."
Musically, the chorus recalls "Born to be My Baby," which makes it instantly familiar and with a catalog as deep as Bon Jovi's, you can't really blame them for drawing water from their own well every now and then.
"Follow" is the first single from Bon Jovi's Nov. 10 album, "The Circle." The tune, written by Bon Jovi and band guitarist Richie Sambora, was produced by John Shanks, with whom the band worked on its last two albums, "Have A Nice Day" and "Lost Highway."
