Grammys move to January for 2010, Swaps Sundays with Super Bowl
An official reason isn't given in the press release, but we have two words for you: Super Bowl. The 2010 Super Bowl moves one week later and will be played on Feb. 7. This year's Grammys were on Feb. 8. See the problem? Basically, the Grammys and Super Bowl are flipflopping Sundays.
However, even though the Grammys move up only one week, NARAS is lopping a month off the eligibility period and herein lies the real reason for announcing the move so early. The usual Grammy year runs Oct. 10-Sept. 30, meaning projects have to be released during that time period. For this year only, the eligibility has moved from Oct. 1-Aug. 31. Therefore, labels with releases coming in September that they wanted to be eligible for Grammy consideration will need to slide those releases into August.
The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards will air from Los Angeles' Staples Center on CBS.
