Last season's "American Idol" winner David Cook is going back to school: on Feb. 13 he starts a college tour at Florida State University in Tallahassee. The outing ends April 25 at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma.

Cook's self-titled debut, released Nov. 18, has been a strong seller, moving close to 900,000 units and spawning the hit single "Light On." The set also includes the treacly "The Time of My Life," the track released following his coronation as "AI's" seventh season champ. Is it just me or does that final moment when the winner is declared and he/she performs their first, always gooey single remind you of when Miss America takes her winner's walk-tiara slipping, glued-on smile, waving like the queen of England? The "AI" moment seems just as forced. I know it's all an effort to capitalize instantly on the excitement and fervor that all those folks who have invested their life voting for a winner feel, but I hate it. And I bet the winner does too since the song never reflects his/her personality- it's just a pageant-perfect, one-size-fits-all regurgitation of how special this moment is.

Anyway, I digress. As you can imagine, Cook is very happy to be on his own tour- his first since headlining the "American Idol" outing this summer. "I'm more than excited to hop on the road and support this record. This tour represents both a new beginning and a return to form for me," said Cook in a statement. "It's our first full tour, and we're all ready to pour whatever blood, sweat, and tears that we can muster into making this show, and every show from here on out, an experience. Part of that experience is bringing back this college tour idea. There's something inherently nostalgic about playing college shows. So many amazing acts used to do it, so it's nice to be able to bring that ideal back, in some small way. And besides, touring on a bus beats what we used to do, which was cram five guys into a 7 passenger van for one show, 13 hours away."
