The first trailer for Marvel's "The Avengers" finally hit the web this morning and we finally get a look and feel of how the movie, and the concept will come together. It's a pretty amazing feat to merge the story lines of five feature films, all with different writers and directors into one singular vision.
Tom Hiddleston as Loki starts the trailer off with some menacing declarations about man being born to be ruled, then some large scale destruction, followed by some VO from Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) explaining the idea behind the Avengers, calling them a "Group of remarkable people" who would be able to "Fight the battles we never could." As good of an explanation as any, no?
With this many huge characters, we can guess that the film will be somewhat montage-heavy, and the trailer follows suit with flashes of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and some glimpses of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, and a bit of Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.
The rest of the trailer is a festival of quick cuts and snappy one liners that really brings front and center the fact that this is a Joss Whedon movie. Robert Downey Jr. gets most of the lines, but that should hardly come as a surprise.
The movie looks big, and I think it looks promising. I've enjoyed Whedon's writing on other Marvel books and if anyone can pull together this big of project it's him.
Take a look at the trailer embedded abover.
The Avengers stars (deep breath) Robert Downey Jr. Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Chris Hemsworth, and Tom Hiddleston. The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon.
The Avengers opens everywhere in 3D on May 4th, 2012
Take a look, are you excited for this mega-movie? Think it's a good idea, or potential disaster?

October 11, 2011 at 12:12PM ESTSlice of Fried Gold You actually went out of your way to post that? To share your inability to watch the thing that the article is about that people are not going to comment on? Really?
October 11, 2011 at 12:13PM ESTAnd now I'VE gone out of my way to comment on your comment, thus propagating this inane madness.

Either Cap don't like his new mask/helmet or the film-makers don't want Chris Evans hiding his handsome face all the time.
Loki looks pissed - this is a good thing.
Internal arguments are present and correct, and I like that Thor thinks Tony Stark is funny - I always liked how The Ultimates portrayed those two as drinking buddies.
I like how Fury describes the team as "remarkable people" so as to mitigate the fact that Black Widow and Hawkeye, while certainly skilled, aren't exactly super-powered.
I like that Hulk looks a lot like Ruffalo - I think this was always the key to making Hulk look realistic - just create a big green muscled version of the actor playing him. There's also less of a disconnect when the actor gives way to CGI.
That is all.
jcpdiesel21 I certainly don't want Chris Evans' face hidden all the time, so I am okay with Cap's seeming lack of mask/helmet.

October 11, 2011 at 12:31PM EST Reply to CommentAm I the only one who's curious to see Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill? Not that the trailer wasn't awesome, but I've been curious to see some footage of her.
alexd Agreed, we interviewed her at the Disney expo and I really liked her energy

October 11, 2011 at 12:50PM EST Reply to CommentThe shot of Loki throwing Tony Stark (sans armor) out a window is interesting. Could the team also be "avenging" a critically injured Iron Man?

October 11, 2011 at 6:09PM EST Reply to CommentCall me weird, but for the first time in my life I find Scarlett Johannson attractive
goodhorse Okay. You are weird. But having said that, is posing attractively in front of explosions supposed to be the reason the Black Widow is a remarkable person?
October 11, 2011 at 7:45PM ESTgeha714 Agreed. But where's Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill?

October 11, 2011 at 9:01PM EST Reply to CommentSigh. It's looking fantastic, it really is. But am I the only one who just can't bring myself to enjoy the replacement of Ed Norton? Everyone seems all gung ho for this Ruffalo character, but he's never made the slightest impression on me. And to see them staying consistent with all the other characters but Hulk? Makes me a little sad.
DougMac I wish they kept Norton too, but I think Ruffalo will be fine. Norton replaced Bana so it's nothing new (and even for those who didn't like Ang Lee's Hulk, Bana wasn't the problem), but all things considered I would really have liked him back too. This looks great overall, but Cap, Thor, and Hawkeyes costumes all look a little bit made for SyFy

October 12, 2011 at 6:10AM EST Reply to CommentWohoo!! Scarlett Johansson looks like a strong, empowered and sexy Black Widow. I love how she leaps up onto some henchman's shoulders with her legs wrapped around his face, thrusting him down against the ground. Hahah.. freakin’ fantastic, can’t wait! Man! I feel like a woman!

October 12, 2011 at 7:05AM EST Reply to CommentI'm afraid, like many, I'm suffering from superhero fatigue and interest levels in this, or their stand-alone films, has steadily waned in recent years. There's just a sense of 'more of the same', even with a strong cast and so many major characters brought together. Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy aside, I really do long for the day when this comic book/superhero phase has passed.
