Watch: Exclusive new behind-the-scenes clip from 'Kick-Ass' Blu-ray
See how they prepared Kick-Ass to get his ass kicked
Wow... it seems like it took years and years from the first time I read the script for "Kick-Ass" to the moment it landed in theaters, and yet it seems like it's been about eleven minutes since it opened, and now we're already gearing up for DVD and Blu-ray, since the film is released on home video on August 3rd.
One of the things I'm most interested in seeing when the Blu-ray is released is a documentary that won't be appearing on the standard DVD edition, called "A New Kind Of Superhero: The Making Of Kick-Ass." We've got an exclusive clip for you today from that documentary, dealing with the way they approached the idea of fight choreography for Aaron Johnson's character. This is just a taste, though, so if you like what you see, you'll end up having to check out the whole thing on the final release of the disc.
If Blu-ray is ever going to catch up to DVD in terms of overall market share, then they need to create content that is both exclusive to the format and that offers real value. I see some ridiculous "special features" sometimes that I can't imagine anyone ever using, but this is something that would tip me towards buying the Blu-ray rather than the DVD if I was debating the choice.
I love the way Lionsgate Blu-rays look for the most part, and I think with "Kick-Ass," they've got a movie that should really push the visual quality as hard as possible. Matthew Vaughn shot in such bright primary colors, and the film's got such an aggressive action style, so I'm hoping the Blu-ray lives up to that .
And if all of you buy three copies of the disc, then maybe we'll get our chance to see Vaughn's proposed sequel, "Balls To The Wall."
Hell, I'm willing to personally keep buying copies until that happens. Whatever it takes.
Thanks to Lionsgate for sending this one over.

I still don't own a Blu Ray player. I feel like there's just gonna be something else once we all have Blu Rays. I'm annoyed that they don't just give a better DVD rather than saying it's a whole new format and saying all of us have to not only replace our DVD collection but also pay more to do it. I NEVER pirate. However, hard for me to get emotionally involved against piracy when corporations are *always* willing to fuck the consumer over a dollar or two. Call my disinclination to upgrade Brand Loyalty. Like the good ol' days. I've contemplated getting a Playstation, so I may actually get a Blu Ray through that.

It's too bad Lionsgate didn't couldn't bet more on its marketing; they put all of their eggs in the web and needed more TV and multiplex. Now it's never going to be more than a cult movie. But that doesn't take away from it being one of the greatest comic book stories that moviemaking has seen.

How this film was presented and rolled out was only slightly less frakked than what Harvey did to Kevin Smith with Zack and Miri.
July 2, 2010 at 11:33PM EST Reply to CommentI mean, you couldn't see Kick Ass in the best theater in my town, Athens, GA.
Because of the "cursing," I was told by the manager. What a load of BS. Whatever it was, there was a ball dropped. This flick SHOULD have been huge. Just as Zack and Miri should have been huge... had not Harvey released it on the ONE weekend in the whole year outside of Super Bowl weekend where you guaranteed the least amount of filmgoers (Halloween weekend).
Oh well. Kick-Ass is going to become the new Big Trouble in Little China.
Meaning 30 years from now, we'll all be quoting Hit Girl the way we quote Jack Burton.
"Yes, Sir, the check is in the mail."
KJ I don't own Blu-Ray, nor do I own a hi-def TV to warrant that format. But I would be willing to pay extra for a second DVD disc that offers expanded features. I don't stream movies online, nor any piracy. So don't limit my access to bonus material just to push the market. I love Kick Ass, and want a second movie, and want to know more behind the scenes.
