The Motion/Captured Interview(s): Kate Beckinsale, Alex O'Loughlin discuss 'Whiteout'

Alex O'Loughlin offers Kate Beckinsale a bit o' the good stuff in an early scene from 'Whiteout,' a new thriller opening this weekend

I'll have a review of "Whiteout" when it opens, but suffice it to say it's not going to redefine the thriller genre for anyone.

It's got a solid ensemble cast, though, and when we were invited to participate in the press day, I was happy to do it because (A) I like Kate Beckinsale's work a lot, and I wanted to talk about some of her smaller films with her and (B) I was curious to see who the heck Alex O'Loughlin was.

Ever since we started HitFix, I have been amazed at the traffic that floods the site every time we run anything about this Australian actor.  Amazed, since I've never seen him in anything, and I feel like I have a pretty good handle on who's working at any given point.  How could this guy mobilize such a passionate fan army while staying totally off my radar up until now?

They flew us to Antarctica to conduct the interviews and forced us to do our introductions standing outside.  Thankfully, I'm isulated by pizza and cheese fries, so I was able to brave the sub-zero temperatures clad only in a blazer:

Here, I kick off the conversation by asking him about that rabid fanbase, and then I discuss this film with him and with his co-star Gabriel Macht:

I felt like I needed to grow a full beard just to compete with the testosterone in that room.  Between the three of us, no ladies could have survived that six minutes.  It's a good thing none of them walked in... they would have been overpowered by the sheer manliness.

On the other end of the spectrum, there's Kate Beckinsale, who is both startlingly pretty in person and also a canny manipulator of the Hollywood system.  Those "Underworld" movies give her the freedom to make films like "Nothing But The Truth" and "Snow Angels," and we talk about how that works in our chat:

Did I mention she's awfully pretty?

"Whiteout" opens Friday, September 11th.

Bluelouboyle Drew, Alex O'Loughlin was great in THE SHIELD, season 6. He was the new member of the strike team. Not for long, though!
I vaguely remember you mentioning once that you're a fan. If you haven't seen the final season yet then do so ASAP. It's amazing. Once again the EMMYs overlooked the smaller shows.

    DonnieDarko Best. Interview. Yet.
Very intelligent questions, and I got the sense Kate Beckinsale was enjoying her time with you.

Patty Moonlight fans aren't rabid! They are inspired and passionate. Moonlight was an inspirational show to a lot of people. Even though the show is cancelled, the inspiration lives on. Now a lot of fans have transferred that passion to enjoying Alex O'Loughlin.

Carlton Love the interview Drew. Gabriel and Alex seem so natural. You may want to know that Alex's surname is pronounced O'Locklin and yeah check him out in The Shield season 6.

  • Thank you Drew, lovely interview! You caught Alex off-guard asking him a Moonlight question but he gave a warm and delightful answer. Agreed with others, Alex is a brilliant actor and will go far with his career.

kale First, thanks for the article on Whiteout and ALEX. Now that you "know who the heck he is", I hope you continue to watch him and post about him. I only recently "discovered" him myself when Moonlight ran on SCI FI channel and have since tried to see everything he has done! Definitely need to check out Oyster Farmer! He is beautiful, sexy, very talented, funny, and seems to be a genuinely nice guy!

KadenD Thanks for sharing this interview. I'm excited to see the whole movie. It appears all that time Kate Beckinsale spent honing her acting chops for serious dramas like Van Helsing and Underworld may have been in vain, as the Whiteout movie she's billed in is getting a hiding at the hands of the critics. The Whiteout movie, or just simply, Whiteout, has nothing to do with the office supply, but rather takes place in Antarctica where a serial killer is on the loose. Most films opening this weekend are getting a lot of stick – no one likes Tim Burton's 9 movie, or Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself, either. Maybe after the Whiteout movie gets a quick payday, perhaps Hollywood can try coming up with something good for a change.
