Charge of 'Avatar' plagiarism goes viral
How much does James Cameron encourage media's attitude to him?
Zoe ('Star Trek') Saldana as the alien being Naytiri in James Cameron's new megascale SF adventure, 'Avatar'
I really dig the still you're looking at next to this article. I love the sense of motion, the tactile qualities of it. The high-res version is a thing of wonder, really. I'm sorry, but as an FX nerd AND as a sci-fi/world building nerd, I am absolutely loving this so far.
I am well aware that there are a lot of people who are at this point gunning for Cameron and the film, and a good deal of those people are in the critical community and in the media. And my guess is that Cameron is well aware of the attitude, and that he really doesn't care. I even get the sense he encourages some of the bigger "Evil Jim" stories. I would once I got a reputation as a legendary world-beating sonofabitch. I wish I was a big enough personality to cultivate that. I envy Cameron his ability to give the finger to pretty much everyone and everything and just pursue a massive personal vision. Live or die, succeed or fail, when "Avatar" hits screens on December 18th, you can believe that what you're seeing is James Cameron's baby.
I love, though, how quick everyone was to come to the defense of Poul Anderson and his short story "Call Me Joe" after iO9 ran their article today. Almost immediately, by mid-morning, the court case was over, Cameron was guilty, and the conversation had already moved into the damages stage. "I wonder if they'll change the title to 'Poul Anderson's Avatar'".
No. They won't. And let's at least pump the brakes a little here, eh?
The story is out of print right now, and not available in print form online. But, since we're friends, I've got a way for you to make your own mind up instead of rushing to judgment.
Hour 25 did an episode of their show where they read "Call Me Joe." The whole thing.
My take on it: there are similarities of idea, but not in a way that convinces me that Cameron wholesale borrowed from this story in particular. I think Cameron's "Avatar" builtds on a tradition within the genre, but I don't think that makes it a rip-off. Both stories deal with someone bonding via psychic link to an organic being on a planet where the human can't go. In both stories, the guy is crippled.
That's about it. Anderson's story deals with what happens when the alien host starts exerting equal pressure back via that psycic link.
Of course, I haven't seen his movie yet, so I'm judging what I think I know about this film. I do know that when it comes out, I'll see it, and then I'll be able to judge whether I think Cameron's just pilfered old SF tropes or whether he's come up with something that builds on them, that adds to the tradition.
And don't forget, in addition to "Call Me Joe," Poul Anderson also wrote a novel about something totally different, and he called it "The Avatar." And Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy and Kennedy's secretary was named James Cameron. It all makes sense now!
"Avatar" opens in theaters and in IMAX 3D on December 18th.

October 27, 2009 at 8:55AM EST Reply to CommentI know you hate when people say this movie looks like a videogame, but I'm sorry, that pic you posted looks no better than a videogame cut scene (obviously gameplay is nowhere near that good yet). I watch the new Final Fantasy trailer, and I'm getting the same level of "realness". With that said, looking like a videogame cut scene isn't putting me off of the movie. I will be there day 1, and I hope it's good. But nothing about the FX have made me think "yeah, that could be real"...not even close. There have been scenes of Beowulf that look "real", there have been scenes in LOTR that look "real"....king kong, district 9, etc....Avatar isn't there
Timmy I saw the new 3½ minute trailer in front of Saw VI and I gotta say the longer sequences with the aliens looked stunningly real. I agree that the stills look cartoony and also the teaser, but to see them in motion in that new trailer was pretty crazy.
October 27, 2009 at 10:33PM ESTJoeK It's been touched on several times in this space over the past several months but the plain fact re: the reflexive Avatar bashing is that alot of fandom and how it has mutated on the 'net just plain stinks.
October 28, 2009 at 12:21AM ESTI once heard a not so young man, clutching a bag full of freshly purchased prequel action figures, deconstructing George Lucas' filmmaking acumen in a way that made him sound like a lowly and barely acceptable member of a High School AV club. These are the people spewing this "it looks like a video game" crap and having all this knee-jerk bile. The idea that they ever enjoyed moviegoing or appreciated the craft of filmmaking to begin with is suspect if you ask me.

October 27, 2009 at 10:53AM EST Reply to CommentStormshadow, did you saw the 15 minutes preview on Avatar Day? It was like dreaming with open eyes. And it makes a lot more sense to see the whole thing before bitchslapping it.
Even if the CGI Protagonist are looking like cutted from a Game, there is a 166 minutes adventure story behind. Worth enough to forget our daily worklife for one evening and entering another world, for a little actionride. With friends, with your girlfriend.
KJ Ah and you´re right with you thoughts about the cgi. On stills or the first teaser, i doesnt look very real. Its better to see it in motion.
October 27, 2009 at 10:55AM ESTstormshadow4life No, i didn't get to go to Avatar Day. So I've only seen the stills and the Quicktime Trailer.
October 27, 2009 at 11:31AM ESTLike I said, I'm not dismissing the film at all, and when it comes down to it, only the story matters to me...but yeah, the stills and trailer just look like a top of the line cutscene so far.
raketenpaul wait for the new trailer on thursday. :)

October 27, 2009 at 1:13PM EST Reply to CommentI just wanted to take a moment to thank you Drew for being one of the few voices of reason on this whole "Avatar" thing. Among fandom, rhe very idea of the film has mutated in bizarre, unsavory ways and it's gotten so ridiculous. Your review is one of the few I'm actually looking forward to. It seems like many web guys have them already written. It's absurd that I have to be grateful to you for simply giving the film a chance, but that's where we are. Keep up the good work.

October 27, 2009 at 2:00PM EST Reply to CommentThe comments on that original article are pretty funny. A bunch of people feel they know for sure that a movie they haven't seen is blatant plagiarism of a book they never heard of until one minute ago. Meanwhile, they end up coming up with 4 or 5 other books that also involve the same concept.
I guess people are just cynical in general. Did you ever hear about the lady trying to sue the Wachowskis for ripping off THE MATRIX from her comic book idea? People spread that one around like it was believable but if you read anything about her you find out that she also believes her story is a sacred text, Harry Potter is based in dangerous real magic and George Lucas is a prophet. When the FBI agents investigating her claim said her idea sounded more like THE TERMINATOR she added that onto the lawsuit and tried to sue both for plagiarism. And you can still find people that believe her.
Alot of people would rather believe the worst. For some reason nerds have to kill their heroes. If you made THE TERMINATOR and god damn ALIENS then you're fucked, they will have to hate you some day. I don't get it, I'm not some worshipful fan, I haven't followed all the sneak peaks and what not but the trailer looks amazing and it's a director I'm excited to see back. If sci-fi fans think it looks bad then I'm kind of befuddled but I especially don't understand why they're so obsessively hateful about the movie and other people who are excited for it. Go work on your costumes or something you grumps.
Erik LeDrew Vern: Titanic dethroned Star Wars. This is the bearing-out of a twelve years old grudge. I am convinced it's as simple as that.

October 27, 2009 at 2:34PM EST Reply to CommentPfffff. To me it's pretty much like one (or is it already two) years ago, when everybody saw the trailer for Wall-E and instantly called it a "Short Circuit" rip off.

October 27, 2009 at 7:13PM EST Reply to CommentWhatever happens with Avatar, I hope that Cameron doesn't take another decade long hiatus before making his next film. He's one of the best director's around and it's a shame to see him not making movies.

October 28, 2009 at 1:46AM EST Reply to CommentThis is what I love about this website. Why wouldn't you be excited for a new sci-fi/action film from one of the best sci-fi/action directors around? It's fine to be disappointed by the trailers, I suppose (I'm not one of those...I'm completely and utterly sold) but this level of vitriol is ridiculous. People almost actually HATE the movie and it's still two months away. It seems to me like you'd want, PRAY that it would be a great movie, and then, if you saw it and hated it, fine. But why not just be optimistic that something good is coming? These people, it kind of seems to me, aren't fucking film fans. They love all the stuff that goes ALONG with films, like the players and the gossip and the statistics but they aren't true genuine fans of the MEDIUM.
As Tracy Morgan said recently, "Fuck em".
I am pre-ordering tickets for the midnight opening. I'm hyped through the roof.

October 28, 2009 at 3:32AM EST Reply to Commentdevin Farci in particular disgusts me with his pathetic and obvious agenda (I guess if Fox paid him like he was paid to give good reviews to garbage like T4 and Gijoe) then it would be different.
He comes across like the biggest loser that is so bitter about his own failure to succeed in film. As they say, those that can do, those that cant...just criticize and in this assholes particular case push an agenda to throw whatever shit he can at this film in the desperate hope that something sticks.
All so that he can try to tear down someone that is extremely successful at what they do.
Farci really is the single most useless, talentless sack of shit polluting the internet. He can never be insulted enough....
Vern To be fair though he's lightened up a little over the last year or so. He still can be cynical and mean but not the constant stream of bile and negativity that he was a couple summers ago. I don't pay much attention to his negative reviews, but when he actually likes something unexpected I take notice. For example he wrote a positive review of FIGHTING, that piqued my interest, and I really liked it.
October 28, 2009 at 4:09AM ESTOn the other hand I'm now remembering an incident where he went off on Disneyland (the fucking guy even hates Disneyland!) and then to defend his position in the forums he insulted some commenter's wife he'd seen a photo of (!). So actually I'm not sure if I want to be defending him.
I don't believe any studios pay off any web critics though.

October 28, 2009 at 6:25AM EST Reply to CommentVern....give me a break. How can anyone defend this pompous, arrogant, phony, and just nasty cunt?
He is on such a little power trip, and he actually thinks he has some power to hurt Avatar, which is what he really wants, thankfully though most of the real world (90%) of everyone else does nt know who this assclown is or care what he thinks.
And his reviews are always smug, and self-rightous. basicallly hes just a contrarion. If everyone is shitting all over something, he will be positive towards it (fighting, gijoe, T4). That not special or clever. It just makes him even more pathetic.....
transplanet I'm sure Farci is a nice guy in real life, and that he's just playing this character on the internet to get hits. But yeah, he's a perfect example of what is wrong with fanboy culture.
October 28, 2009 at 9:06AM ESTVern Well, I mostly agree with you, I just wanted to give him some credit for not being as bad as he used to be. What does it take to change the essence of a man? Time.

October 28, 2009 at 10:44AM EST Reply to CommentI have to admit, as an attorney this case looks ripe for plagiarism. Drew, you're on to something when you distinguish what are tropes of the sci-fi genre and what are blatant acts of story theft. However, the basis of a paraplegic engaging in a psychic link with a being to engage an otherwise hostile climate is a pretty specific premise. It would be like you writing a movie in which a spy with amnesia has to piece together his world before the company he used to work for finds him and kills him first. But in your version, he works for the KGB. Sure, it's "Bourne" redux, and a genre like this has a lot of crossover (like sci-fi). But the jumping off point, which as "Call Me Joe" can be distinguished from other material, and that's the key. If Anderson (or his estate, not sure if he's still alive) can allege this fact successfully, Cameron will be found guilty of plagiarism.
transplanet What? WHAT? Are you an IP lawyer? I hope you specialize in traffic tickets, because that comment is unbelievable. Do you actually think your spy example holds up as either relevant or a good case of copyright infringement?

October 28, 2009 at 11:25AM EST Reply to CommentEveryone knows that Cameron really ripped off FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAINFOREST. Seriously, watch the movie again... Also, I'm getting a little jaded by this movie, not because of Cameron, but because of the seemingly automatic praise being given out to this movie by internet movie critics like Drew. Yeah, there's some bashing going on, but there's also some obvious building up, or, "apologists" happening all ready. I'm not going to bother cutting and pasting some comments I've read for me to form this opinion, but, it seems obivous that these critics are going to give a positive review of this movie no matter what. It reminds me of the reception THE PHANTOM MENANCE got after being released. And to include Drew into this, I'd like to bring up how his review of that movie was presented on AICN: Before each posting, a AICN reviewer (Quint, Hercules, Merrick, Beaks, Harry, etc.) Opens with some remarks about the article and/or the contributor. Before Drew's (Moriarty) review of THE PHANTOM MENANCE, Harry Knowles, the founder and owner of AICN, wrote a very long essay basically telling people to ignore Drew's critical opinions about the movie, even though Knowles himself had not seen it. And to further discredit any, what he felt, negative views of the movie (Drew's actual review was kinda positive), after Drew's review Knowles posted another essay written by a school teacher praising the movie basically because her students (young school children) loved it, and, like, that's all that should matter. Knowles obviously was going to like that movie no matter what. And since he had the platform, was going to promote it positively no matter what as well. I'm beginning to see the same type of reaction to AVATAR. Even within Drew's writings. Maybe it has to do with, what I think, is a growing feeling of anything that's considered negative is automatically suspect, happening more and more today. Example: Roger Ebert wrote up an article for his website giving his reactions for the early footage released for AVATAR in August. He wasn't impressed by what he saw. But, it seemed as if he was apologizing for not being overwhelmed by it. As if the belief is that you are supposed to be thrilled and in awe of this, but, since he wasn't, he should make amends. A lot of other people I've read comments from are reacting the same way. As if some unexisting entity is saying "Look, this is a new movie written and directed by James Cameron. A sci-fi movie, written and directed by James Cameron. Incorporating new technology in the film-making. As a film fan you are SUPPOSED to like this. If you don't, well, I guess you don't know that much about the power of cinema, do you?" This is becoming a galvanizing project. I think its become a 3-D film-making vs. Non 3-D film-making issue. And that's where the hatred for Cameron is coming from; HE'S the one going around talking as if he's the savior of cinema. As if HE came up with 3-D, and since he's so great, everyone else should join him in this "renaissance". I think people are under the belief that if this movie does well, then it'll be the final nail in the coffin of non3-D film-making. Which, I can understand that kind of criticism coming from independent art-film-makers; It must be extremely fustrating not to be able to get funding or distribution for your small film when the industry is spending hundreds of millions of dollars refurnishing theaters into IMAX and digital 3-D just for movies like A CHRISTMAS CAROL and AVATAR. I have to say, from all the unabashed defending of AVATAR that's happening, and the ever-dwindling coverage of art films, I'd have to agree with the skepticism.

October 28, 2009 at 11:40AM EST Reply to Commenttransplanet, I've been working in trademarks and copyrights for the last 4 years, so yes, I know precisely what I'm talking about. There are more facts to this case than the io9.com article offers, I'm sure. And if you calmly read what I've written, you would understand that I say "if Anderson can show that the premise is distinct" then Cameron can be found guilty of plagiarism. But I'm not here to give a law lesson, just a reaction to the story as told in the media. Please, keep your cool.

October 28, 2009 at 3:27PM EST Reply to CommentThe hate towards Avatar and Cameron just a massive conspiracy! Right.... idiots? Hey I got an idea maybe people don't like Avatar and are quick to bash it because Avatar deserves it! (based on the trailers posters story and hype). Imagine that shocker ...right yeah yeah I know you like a movie that others hate/dislike/insult and your case of BUTTHURT is raging out of control... what a shame. Please stop crying about Avatar if the trailers posters hype and story were worthy of praise then it would receive it. This is not a hate Avatar conspiracy. The dislike and or hate is justly deserved. This so called "Original" movie appears to remind everybody of 10 or 20 different movies and video games. Matrix, Dances with Wolves, The Last Samurai, Halo, Star craft, Dark Crystal, Delgo, Ferngully 2,Battle for Terra, Call Me Joe, ect ect...
Justin I just don't get how you can dislike or hate something you haven't even seen yet. Forget about Avatar for a minute. I'm not even talking about Avatar. ANYTHING that has yet to be released. Shit, even a country you haven't been to. Would you dislike or hate a country based on a handful of pictures and anecdotes you'd received? I sincerely hope not. It's just about being level-headed and rational. Judge it when you see it in it's entirety. That's all.
October 28, 2009 at 4:02PM ESTAnd that might be the funniest thing of all. Everyone who "hates" Avatar right now will probably go to see it, if only to justify their hatred. And if that's the case, who wins in the end? Exactly.
Vern But see that's exactly what we're talking about. You just called us all idiots and wrote to us in this condescending belligerent asshole kind of tone. For what? Because we want to see a movie that you don't want to see. It's not a big issue, I don't care about this "conspiracy" that you imagine somebody else is imagining. I just don't get why you are so hateful and insulting about a movie nobody has seen. You're weird, is all. And not very friendly.
October 28, 2009 at 6:55PM ESTYackBacker @Justin- people are reacting to the marketing hype Cameron and the studio are ratcheting up, that's why some people have gone negative on the film. Any signs of faults with the movie will be focal points for this group of people- they want to say "See! FOX is full of it! This thing looks horrible!" It seems like irrational behavior, but there's definitely a motive behind it.
October 28, 2009 at 6:58PM ESTJustin Yackbacker: I understand, I do. There are PLENTY of movies I'm coming out soon that I think look shitty and I am not jazzed for. But not being impressed with what you've seen so far, or being annoyed by the hyperbole and the touting, is WORLDS apart from saying you outright "hate" or "dislike" a movie that hasn't been released. That's ridiculous. And foolish. For instance, I don't "like" or "love" Avatar at all. How could I? I haven't seen it yet!! But I am excited for it. I am optimistic that it will be good.
October 28, 2009 at 8:25PM ESTYackBacker @Justin- I agree that there is a point beyond which people lose all credibility by spewing blind hatred. I too am neither hyped nor upset over this movie. I want it to be excellent because I care about this genre. Am I skeptical? Sure, I'm not a huge Cameron fan. But I will absolutely see this opening weekend if the reviews are positive.
