With today's Screen Actors Guild announcement, we've officially moved onto the next stage of awards season, when the industry has its say and shares the spotlight a bit with the critics. I was happy to see that a few extraneous elements of the season (Demián Bichir, Jonah Hill) got some recognition and kept things fresh, because that's precisely why I decided to transition the annual "If I Had a Ballot" feature into something more thorough.

In its stead, The Longlists are just that: a series of lists in various categories featuring what I thought was the top echelon of each. I trotted out 10, rather than the Oscar-centric five, throughout.

If you missed it, Monday I wrote up my list of the year's 10 best films. Friday brings a final wrap-up with year-end superlatives in the categories below as well as a few others. And soon enough, it'll be 2012 and the year will officially be a memory. But the season will forge on.

Note: I've abstained from the documentary, foreign film and animated feature film categories. I haven't seen enough docs or foreign films this year to be so definitive and there aren't enough animated features to even warrant a "category." Meanwhile, I've combined original and adapted screenplays into one "Best Screenplay" field.

Feel free to offer up your early lists in the comments section below.

Kind of surprised you didn't give Allison Janney some lovin' in Supporting Actress - I got the impression you loved her in The Help.

wisconsinkel Props to you for Jeannie Berlin. I was beginning to fear that role would be little more of a cameo in a never-released film. It's good to see people of her caliber moonlight as an actor once more. She simply just does not realize the depths of her talent.

i was thinking with so many small indie contenders vying for the last best spots, can gosling actually sneak in for ides comes nomination morning? critics have been undecisive so far I wondered if Gosling has enough goodwill in the industry to pull off something like that.

I'm curious you still placed Serkis in Supporting Actor considering you've been championing him (rightfully so) as Lead since the film's release.

Otherwise, I agree with your sentiments regarding 2011 (I read your 10 best list first). A few remarkable treasures (Tree of Life is indeed my #2 as well), but overall a rather interestingly and, dare I say, slightly underwhelming year.

I love that you singled out Charlotte Gainsbourg's performance in Melancholia. Never understood the praise for Kirsten Dunst. Sure, she's good but Gainsbourg is the real deal here.

I'm glad she's going back to work with Von Trier in The Nymphomaniac.

Oh, and you've seen Sherlock Holmes 2? Is it as fun as the first or is it embargoed?

Really? "Shame" for Screenplay? It's such an undercooked script tenuous on detail and severely lacking in dimension. Can't understand this.

Glad to see you single out Gainsbourg for "Melancholia," though. I agree she's better than Dunst.

Kristopher Tapley I think the script for Shame is a remarkable piece of writing for it's study of behavior.

      December 14, 2011 at 2:03PM EST
    • Default-avatar

JLPatt I would better appreciate its study of behavior if it actually fleshed out the behavior in the first place. The film is just written so sketchily and there's simply not enough there for us to even draw upon - let alone care - why the characters are the way they are.

pod I actually really liked the preliminary version of the Shame script that was circulating around -- it was a well-fleshed study of character behaviour that left me unsettled (and much like Hunger, it's incredibly descriptive, which helps us understand what McQueen wants to convey through his visuals). The script that is provided by Fox as a FYC is good but many parts read more like a transcription after-the-fact of improved scenes. I'll only get to see the movie this weekend but I have a feeling that Shame will hold up quite well onscreen.

Yeah, I had that feeling, too. Totally felt like a transcription, which was kind of annoying, but whatever. I'd be interested to check out that preliminary version.

Peyman Moaadi would be in my top five for the year, as well (not sure if he's in yours or just top ten). Also, glad to see Mara on your list, as blah as you feel about the film as a whole. I'm still interested in seeing her performance.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross didn't make your top ten scores? Yikes. I've only listened to a few tracks so I can't really argue either way but yeah surprising. I'm waiting to listen to it in the context of the film first.

Although any list of the ten best scores of the year should really include X-Men First Class.

Hard to argue with a lot of your selections, Kris, but it's a shame you couldn't find any room for 50/50. Still one of my favorite films of the year.

Kris, when I read your acting lists full of respectable performances, which for the most part I would agree with, I can see why you're not all that excited about the year in film 2011. There was some great stuff but still I'm shrugging a little bit.

Nice picks overall, but I'd say it's missing on The Skin I Live In at several arts & crafts fields. Art Direction, Music, Cinematography, it's one of this year's richest films in sight and sound.

I loved reading this, simply because that is how I operate my lists, as well. I do top 10s for about 20 categories. And then I tally at the end. Normally, I'll end up with several films over "10". Great lists!!!
