Wow. No "Moneyball" or "Hugo" for Best Picture? I think both have solid and well deserved shots at a nomination. In fact, "Hugo" might actually win.

DiCaprio and Close are out? Brad Pitt with two nods? Whoa. Bold predictions. Are these "what you really think" or "what you really want"? Can't see Rooney Mara jumping over Close, Theron, or even Olsen. Oldman is a little more understandable and I would love if that were to come true.

Guy Lodge Given the predictions for The Descendants and War Horse, I think it's pretty clear this isn't a wish list. But I get bored with the whole process if I don't take a few chances.

And I think most pundits would agree that Mara has more heat than Olsen and Theron right now, much as I wish that weren't the case.

Very interesting predictions on Director -- I'm also predicting a Spielberg snub there. I just don't see a very passionate response to the film: more respect than adoration, and I think the director branch may sneak in someone with a tight group of supporters. My (foolish) guess? Refn for "Drive".
And you know what? I'm also not confident in Payne. I think he'll get in, but I wouldn't be terribly shocked if he misses out nomination morning. And continuing on my 'what if?' surprises, "Moneyball" gets noms for Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Screenplay, Editing, Score. BAM.

The Academy Awards should be cancelled for this year. The fact that an inferior silent movie is even being considered for nomination in the sound category speaks volumes to how mr. Weinstein has onxe again corrupted the
Hollyward awards process. Ignore this week's nominations, like rhe industry has ignored it's customers and Hollywood's tradition of making at least a handful of films each year that aren't horrible and of the lowest possible quality for the highest possible amount of money.

We seem to have the same hunch about Tinker Tailor doing rather well come nomination morning. For the lone director nod I'm leaning towards Winding Refn though. And I have a hunch that Fassbender (I consider him a lock) might (deservedly) pull in Mulligan in supporting. Gary Oldman is so in.
Win Win will get a nod.

I agree with the TTSS's late surge. Will pick up plenty of the pretty awards.

Hey guys. FYI, take this conversation over to Guy's thread:

I meant to close the comments here because this will be a mainstay post for each season.

This is my ballot (right now, not final) except for editing. I just have to convince myself they are more thoughtful than that. The artist is dead last in that category, to me, and I'm buoyed by last year to think they won't vote straight ticket below the mains.

You think Rebel Wilson could pull a Melissa McCarthy this year? I would love to agree with you, but she doesn't have any one scene to get nominated for like McCarthy then. She could definitely get some critics noms(and maybe wins) for her performance with such an unsure field at the moment. Here's hoping you're right!

I really don't understand how Nolan's films get recognized for achievement in the sound categories. I always find them to be an aural assault of confusing extraneous noise and soundtrack mixed so high that the combination leaves dialogue in final moments confused at best.

Interesting predictions, highly invested in Amour.

I personally don't see it getting a Best Picture nom, with Moonrise Kingdom to replace it (Django to get in as well). Hugh Jackman will certainly get a nomination and I'd take Watts over Wallis/Riva.

Agreed on animated and documentary categories.

A Royal Affair + Kon-Tiki were both fantastic, I hope they both get nominations alongside The Intouchables, Amour and probably No too.

    Not long now!

So you think Christoph will win Supporting Actor? Glad to hear that, I wasn't sure he had enough steam, but he would be my pick.
