Song(s) Of The Day: Ryan Bingham streams two tracks ahead of new album release
Academy Award winner Ryan Bingham may not have won a Grammy yet, but he might have a shot now with forthcoming album with "Junky Star," featuring backing band Dead Horses.
The Lost Highway album, which will be Bingham's third, is destined to drop on Sept. 7, and has the aide and star bombast of producer T Bone Burnett, who was instrumental (get it?) in the Oscar wins for "Crazy Heart" theme "The Weary Kind."
To tease it out, the singer-songwriter has posted two tracks, "Depression" and "Hallelujah" (no, not THAT "Hallelujah"), on his website for free stream, no strings attached.
Now, I don't mean that Bingham is on the track to Grammy glory because these tracks are so painfully beautiful and outstanding -- though they are great compositions, and sit easily in that vein of Americana that doesn't offend pure country sensibilities and the kind of country that doesn't cloy like Radio Country does. "Hallelujah" has a particularly gorgeous electric guitar part and a simple chorus melody.
No, it's just that "The Weary Kind" has put him on the map for award-givers to now pay attention, even a year late. And if there's anything the Recording Academy does well is jumping on the bandwagon late. Keep your eye on the slow-moving Americana/folk categories later this year.
