Music Top 10 Of 2010: The Best Albums Of The Year

I didn't think albums sucked this year, because albums never suck any year. It goes without saying that top 10 lists are and will always remain subjective, though year after year I find myself on the defense -- but less so out of lines in the sand, but because of the girth of solid releases.

Some material falls out of that traditional realm of album, and I guess I just keep with what works. Killer soundtracks like those from "Scott Pilgrim" and "Tron," EPs like Robyn's "Body Talk Pt. 1" and The Tallest Man on Earth's "Sometimes the Blues Is Just a Passing Bird," singles collections and reissues from Fucked Up and Rolling Stones, and albums that seem like singles collections (here's to Cee-Lo Green, Gaslight Anthem, Redman, Ariel Pink).

It pains me to omit some of my favorite indie acts like Arcade Fire, Jonsi from Sigur Ros, The National, Joanna Newsom, Sharon Jones, The Books, Hot Chip and some newer rock-leaning acts like Pearly Gate Music, Phantogram, Here We Go Magic, Women and Titus Andronicus. Dillinger and Devo had a sweet year, as did Cudi and Big Boi.

See how many names I crammed in there? And that's just the top level stuff. Good year, guys, there's never a sucky one!

1. Laura Marling, "I Speak Because I Can"
2. Kanye West, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy"
3. Beach House, "Teen Dream"
4. Sade, "Soldier of Love"
5. Sleigh Bells, "Treats"
6. Local Natives, "Gorilla Manor"
7. Janelle Monae, "The ArchAndroid"
8. LCD Soundsystem, "This Is Happening"
9. Nathaniel Rateliff, "In Memory of Loss"
10. Small Black, "New Chain"

No Man on the Moon II makes this list invalid.

No Dead Weather either? Yeah. This list is a joke.

    • I dont think The Dead Weather made any top 10 list.

      December 24, 2010 at 10:11PM EST
    • ...and that is, of course, a grave oversight

EJ My thoughts exactly - 'Brothers' is one of my favorite albums of all time, let alone this year.

    • Heck yes! "Brothers" is their second best for me, though.

  • Some great albums, but it's a little light on the rock. Dead Weather, Black Keys, Deerhunter, Arcade Fire, Titus Andronicus, Broken Social Scene, Surfer Blood and The Besnard Lakes all came out with better stuff than Local Natives.

Still, it's kind of refreshing that your list is fairly different from many I've seen

    This list is awful.
Let's not forget Robyn's full "Body Talk" album, which is superior than half of the stuff on that list. Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs" is one of the best of 2010 too.

katie, a princess hence me mentioning Robyn's "Part 1." As an EP, its far more solid than the full-length, imo.

Wow. Terrible list. Could have been made significantly better by including a generally unanimous choice for top 10 albums lists with Arcade Fire's The Suburbs.

These music top 10 lists are mostly serving as a reminder for why I don't generally come to this site for music.

  • Man, come real arseholes posting on here. This is Katie's top ten not your's. I think it's a solid list. I of course have some different artists on my own list, but there is nothing on Katie's list that I object to.

There should be a rule that if you're going to say an album sucks you have to say what album you would put above it. It's easy to criticize anything. Also, I love how some people criticize picks they've never heard of.
