Watch: 'Mad Men's' Jon Hamm takes on 'The Town'
Who knew that Don Draper was such a fan?
One of the more respected commercial films screened at this week's Toronto Film Festival is Ben Affleck's "The Town." While most admit it's not as artistically ambitious as Affleck's previous effort, "Gone Baby Gone," but it features an impressive ensemble cast who get to showcase many of their charismatic talents. Joining Affleck in the film are Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Renner, an almost unrecognizable Blake Lively and none other than Don Draper himself, Jon Hamm.
Now, it's almost sacrilegious to say so on HitFix, but I've probably only watched one or two episodes of "Mad Men" so far. Unfortunately, the life of a movie journalist often limits what you can find the time to catch on the small screen and I purposely didn't even get a DVR until less than a year ago. Excuses aside, I had hoped to ask Hamm something about "Men" for our readers, but as soon as I was introduced (before the cameras began to tape), Hamm asked, "HitFix? That's Alan Sepinwall's site. I read that." And, after a quiet "Yes!" went through my heart, well, that's when the camera started rolling…
As for the big screen, Hamm has a great presence in "The Town" and you hope he'll find more time for bigger roles during his downtime from playing America's favorite advertising executive. In fact, we'd bet on it.
"The Town" opens nationwide on Friday.

Linda I so agree. Never really visited HitFix (maybe 2x month) until Alan moved here, now it's every day and I'll read some other articles.
September 16, 2010 at 11:06AM ESTrowan729 Ditto, Linda. I actually was lead to Sepinwall by my local newspaper critic Rich Heldenfels, who linked to Alan for better Mad Men reviews. I was thus hooked, and followed him here to HitFix, which I now visit multiple times daily and have come to love Fienberg and McWeeny as well.
September 16, 2010 at 12:21PM ESTHow wonderful to know Hamm reads the reviews, too!
actually He didn't say that he reads the Mad Men recaps...although you would assume that's what he reads instead of say, the ones for big bang theory or something.

September 16, 2010 at 12:46AM EST Reply to CommentGreg,

I know you speak geek, so I know you must have put your hands on Mark Waid and Alex Ross's seminal graphic novel, Kingdom Come.

I've thought that John Hamm would make a PERFECT older Superman if Warners ever decided to do a couple of JLA films, but in a twist, do the Kingdom Come storyline.

John Hamm as Superman. Lucy Lawless as Wonder Woman. Clint Eastwood as a broken and bitter Bruce Wayne. Alec Baldwin as Alan Scott. Dwayne Johnson as a grown up and brainwashed Billy Batson. Vin Diesel as Magog.

We can dream.
See, I'd much prefer Hamm as an older Bruce Wayne, but that's just me.

September 16, 2010 at 1:21AM EST Reply to CommentThere are four more books (soon to be five -- woo hoo!!!) in the Patrick Kinsey novel series Gone Baby Gone comes from. I would love to see the others made into a high quality television show.
Angela Huh, I had never heard of Gone Baby Gone before. I love to read and this is going on my to read list now. Thanks for the info.
September 16, 2010 at 8:27PM ESTsepinwall Angela, Gone Baby Gone is actually the fourth book in the Kenzie/Gennaro series, and while it's arguably the best (which is why Affleck adapted it), you might want to start a few books earlier, if not going all the way back to A Drink Before the War, the first book.

September 16, 2010 at 1:24PM EST Reply to CommentI too migrated here because of Alan Sepinwall! I started with him because fellow Television Without Pity commentors about The Wire recommended his excellent blog.

September 16, 2010 at 8:42PM EST Reply to CommentVery nice interview. I put the movie in my Netflix queue right after seeing this.

FWIW, I posted a link to an interview with Jon Hamm on Fresh Air with Terry Gross on NPR, over in Alan's corner. It's also very interesting and it's 37 minutes long so there's more time to get into "Mad Men", Jon's personal life, etc.
Here is it again:
http://www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?prgId=13
September 19, 2010 at 7:22PM EST Reply to CommentI'm glad you split panned the audio, and I know it will take a mixer to accomplish this, but could you not split it *quite so wide*? It's a bit disconcerting on speakers; I suspect it would drive me up a wall if I were listening on headsets.
