Oscar Watch: Scorsese to receive Golden Globes lifetime achievement award
Plus: David Rockwell thankfully returns as Oscar production designer
The always humble Martin Scorsese can't turn the Globes down.
The HFPA announced today that Martin Scorsese will be honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes this January. There must be some feeling of deja vu for the acclaimed filmmaker about the award. Just last year, Scorsese helped present buddy Steven Spielberg with the same honor.
The organization's lifetime achievement will be Scorsese's third Globe. He previously won best director for "The Departed" and "Gangs of New York." Scorsese won his first Academy Award in 2006 for "The Departed."
Will Spielberg return the favor and present to Scorsese? We'll soon find out. The Golden Globes will be hosted by Ricky Gervais and broadcast live on NBC, Sunday, Jan. 17.
Scorsese's next film, "Shutter Island," hits theaters on Feb. 19

- The producers and host(s) may have changed, but happily, David Rockwell is returning as the production designer for the 82nd Academy Awards. Rockwell and his art directors received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Art Direction for Variety, Music or Nonfiction Programming for last year's gorgeous show, but bizarrely lost out to the MTV Video Music Awards. In any event, Rockwell's return assures that the look of the show won't go too over-the-top with co-producer Adam Shankman in the mix.

Matt Dillon and Taraji P. Henson will announce this year's Independent Spirt Award nominees on Dec. 1 at the Sofitel Hotel in Los Angeles. Why the awards will be announced at 8 AM PST doesn't make much sense (if you're not going for the morning shows why not just do it at 10 or 11 AM?). Dillon is a two-time winner for "Crash" and "Drugstore Cowboy." Henson got her big break in the indie "Hustle and Flow," but took a huge step with an Oscar nod for her role in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." The Spirits will be broadcast on March 5 at 8 AM from LA Live.
- The International Documentary Association announced their nominees for the 2009 IDA Awards. The Feature Documentary contenders include "Afghan Star," "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," "Diary of a Times Square Thief," "Food, Inc." and "Mugabe and the White African." The Short Documentary field includes "The Delian Mode," "Salt," "Sari's Mother" and "The Solitary Life of Cranes." Winners will be announced on Dec. 4 at 8 PM at the Director's Guild in West Hollywood.
