Oscar Watch: Hollywood Awards to recognize 'Precious,' 'An Education' and 'Hurt Locker' talent
The Hollywood Awards, which are pretty much the only reason the Hollywood Film Festival stays up and running every year, announced another round of award "winners" today. Up and coming stars such as Carey Mulligan ("An Education"), Gabourey 'Gabby' Sidibe ("Precious: Based on Push a novel by Sapphire") and Jeremy Renner ("The Hurt Locker") all received honors from a show that has as much legitimacy as the ShoWest Awards (basically, if your studio can show up and pay for a table, you get a trophy). But no, don't fear, we'll be spared another strange recognition for "Bradley Cooper (at least, we hope so). Here's a quick rundown of the winners so far:
Hollywood Breakthrough Actress Award: Carey Mulligan, "An Education"
Hollywood Breakthrough Actor Award: Jeremy Renner, "The Hurt Locker"
Hollywood Breakthrough Director Award: Lee Daniels, "Precious"
New Hollywood Award: Gabourey 'Gabby' Sidibe, "Precious"
Hollywood Breakthrough Screenwriter Award: Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Webber, "500 Days of Summer"
Previously, Roger Deakins was named the recipient of the Hollywood Cinematographer Award, Alexandre Desplat the Hollywood Film Composer Award, Dana Glauberman the Hollywood Editor Award and Colleen Atwood the Hollywood Costume Designer Award.
More awards such as the Career Achievement, Best Actor, Director, etc., etc. should be paid for, er, determined over the next few weeks.
The excuse for TV coverage, a red carpet, drinks and a free meal (which I will gladly attend if invited) will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Oct. 26.
In other awards news, the Los Angeles branch of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts will honor Robert De Niro with the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film. De Niro has won two Oscars, but never a prestigious BAFTA Award even though he's been nominated six times. The Tribeca Film Festival co-founder will be feted for his legendary career on Nov. 5 at the 2009 BAFTA/LA Britannia Awards (different than the BAFTA's held in London) just in time for the opening of his new movie "Everbody's Fine" on Dec. 4. De Niro has an outside shot of getting in the overall best actor race for "Fine," but until anyone sees the road trip flick (which looks like it could either be a pleasant surprise or incredibly predictable) his true chances will be anyone's guess.
