Nominations for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards have been announced, with "The Hunger Games" and "Bridesmaids" tied for the most nominations with eight apiece.

Somewhat surprisingly, fan favorite "Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" didn't receive as many nods as in previous years, with only two nominations, in the Movie of the Year and Best Kiss categories (the latter for one of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson's steamy on-screen liplocks). However, neither of the actors managed to score a nod in the Best Female/Best Male Performance categories, a first for both.

Of course, "The Hunger Games"' big showing at the nominations this year (stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth all received nods) can be accounted for by its "next-'Twilight'" pop culture status currently, with the film recently crossing the $600 million mark in worldwide box-office.

As a point of comparison, in 2011 B.H.G. ("Before Hunger Games") "Twilight: Eclipse" received five nods and won three awards including Best Movie - a category taken by the first three films in the sparkly-vamp franchise. This year, of course, "Breaking Dawn" will have an incredibly tough competitor in "The Hunger Games", which begs the question: will the "Twilight" franchise's streak in the top category be broken by Jennifer Lawrence and company this year?

In case you were wondering, there are indeed three other films in the running for Movie of the Year, namely "Bridesmaids", "The Help" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2". But let's face it: none of them stand a chance against the aforementioned 'tween favorites (unless, that is, "Harry Potter" manages to score an upset due to its being the final film in the boy wizard franchise).

Other top nominees this year include "21 Jump Street" (6 nods), "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" (6 nods), "The Help" (4 nods), Ryan Gosling-starrer "Drive" (3 nods), "Horrible Bosses" (3 nods) and "Project X" (3 nods), the shaky-cam teen party flick that became a surprise hit when it was released this past March.

In addition to the shakeup among the nominees themselves, this will also be the first year for several new categories at the Movie Awards, including Best Cast, Best On-Screen Transformation, Best Gut-Wrenching Performance, Best On-Screen Dirtbag and Best Music. In that last category, artists including LMFAO ("Party Rock Anthem", featured in "21 Jump Street"), Kid Cudi (the Steve Aoki remix of "Pursuit of Happiness", "Project X") and Chemical Brothers ("The Devil is in theDetails", "Hanna") received a tip of the hat.

As for artists slated to perform at the ceremony, chart-topping pop band fun. are slated to hit the stage this year, with other acts to be announced at a later date.

This is the first year that MTV had to change their nomination process due to Twilight dominating every year. So of course they made sure Twilight didn't dominate every category like it usually does. I guess MTV didn't have confidence in the THG fandom enough so they had to "tweak" the original process. What a joke.

Hunger game lacks love and sexiness there are just kids running in the woods so misserable and too much africa. Go Twilight and Harry!!

How is it owning when they didn't let the fans vote for the nominees this year? MTV sucks. Changing the rules so Breaking Dawn couldn't win.

Sorry HITFIX, the only way The Hunger Games can own Twilight is when the MTV itself picks the nominees, not the fans like years past. What is MTV going to do next year when The Hunger Games can't even be nominated? Will they go back and kiss Twilight fan's behinds?

And so it starts..where outlets start trumpeting THG over Twi and acting like it only got 2 noms because it's not as popular anymore. Well, no. If you take the time to think about it, MTV is scared s**tless of Twi winning again and managed to change the nom process so they didn't get included. That tells me that they couldn't have them compete head to head. But will any headlines reflect that? I think not. People can't wait to bleat out the glad tidings of Twi's downfall. Even if it's not true.

So MTV, didn't you announce you changed the voting process, so more smaller, quirky movies have a chance? I wonder why THG taking in almost all categories, but the the smaller quirky films are missing!? Not to mention by kissing a new fandoms butt you pissed off a true devoted one! Not a smart move!

This article is too funny for words. You really might want to restrain the gloating. If THG is such an unstoppable behemoth, then why did MTV have to totally revamp (pun intended) their nomination procedure so they could stack the deck in THG's favor? Just a hint, as entertainment commentators go? Don't quit your day job.

Look guys, I know how passionate Twifans can be and it's only business for MTV to do what they did. The MTV MA was being dominated by Twilight year after year and they were losing other viewers from it. Harry Potter couldn't win anything against Twilight and so you know The Hunger Games didn't stand a chance. MTV had to do what it had to do to ensure they could pull more viewers than just Twilight fans. Let these other movies have their chance finally and let's allow Rob and Kristen to move on to better things. Both have awesome films going to Cannes this year so who needs more MTV golden popcorn right?

Rick Well, now they've lost the Twifans while trying to kiss the behind of the new kids on the block. Que sera sera. "THG owned BD1" my aching dying gluteus maximus. More like MTV held BD1 down so THG could screw the better performance.

Some things are not to be borne, and this is one of them. It amounts to deliberate deceit. I'll pull any Twi-lights off of YouTube this year. This is one viewer MTV can kiss goodbye.

I'm actually glad Twilight isn't up for Best actor categories or Best Picture. I don't care if pisses off the fans...it doesn't deserve those categories, and Im tired of it winning every year.

Rick That reeks strongly of bitterness. Sorry to say...we weren't tired of it. BD1 is the best of the four so far, with Rob and Kristen delivering their best work of the Saga to date, and MTV rigs the noms to not them off at the knees and lock them out of categories they would have won in a walk? MTV can kiss my fundament.

Marianne @Rick : I actually think Taylor Lautner has got even worse at acting. The whole confrontation scene between him and Sam in Wolf mode was seriously eye roll inducing. And even if it was the best of the series...it still doesn't deserve a Best picture nod. So who cares if all the Twi-hards will no longer watch. MTV will gain all the people it lost because of it being "The Twilight Awards" every year.

      May 1, 2012 at 2:54PM EST
    • Default-avatar

Rick @Marianne Perhaps so. Perhaps they will win those people back. And perhaps throwing the fans a bone by allowing the kids into the Best Kiss category will keep some Twifans, but I think they're underestimating our ability to see the hypocrisy. I think they'll lose a lot Twilight fans...and there was a reason WHY Twilight won every year. Now that reason will be gone. The thing that makes me laugh is that THG made it into the BK category at all, based on one anemic little peck of the lips. That alone tells me that the noms, and quite probably the voting as well, is rigged. I have a $5.00 bet with my wife the THG wins Best Kiss, in spite of being undeserving of even being included in the category. (tips his hat) Ciao.
