TV Ratings: 'Rising Star,' 'Big Brother,' 'Unforgettable' rise on Sunday

CBS leads overall, but ABC currently leads the key demo

Fast National ratings for Sunday, July 13, 2014.

Boosted presumably by the overtime conclusion of the World Cup Final, ABC's lineup was up on Sunday night, including "Rising Star," which helped the network lead primetime among young viewers. CBS, meanwhile, capitalized on early primetime strength for "60 Minutes" and "Big Brother" to cruise to an overall win.

There were few other notables on Sunday, but CBS' decision to swap time periods for "Unforgettable" and "Reckless" resulted in a predictable demo bump for "Unforgettable" at nine, now gifted with a "Big Brother" lead-in, and a predictable demo drop for "Reckless," but both shows did very close to what they did last week.

On to the numbers...

No 'Mockingjay' or 'Jurassic World' top Comic-Con 2014 schedule surprises

Where did the comedy panels go?

Comic-Con has become a strange bird to Hollywood studios.  Bringing talent and previewing footage can give tremendous hype and word of mouth to eventual blockbusters ("Django Unchained," "Gravity," "Iron Man") or it can end up providing false hope for genre films hope will be smash hits ("Cowboys and Aliens," "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World").  That means it can be an expensive endeavor if things don't go well and, moreover, you might not realize that until six months later on your opening weekend.

NBC’s “Marry Me” really isn’t about a wedding and a marriage

Recap: 'True Blood' - 'Death Is Not the End'

It’s sometimes possible for something to keep going for a while after all the life in it is used up

Last week, "True Blood" went on a killing spree, dispatching major characters and lesser recurring characters and bit players and new characters—including a few that had potential, such as Sarah Newlin’s guru boyfriend—with an indiscriminating, bland casualness. The only loss that was supposed to mean anything was the unexpected, last-minute killing of Alcide, but his shooting—at the hands of a couple of random gun nuts, just after he’d appeared from out of nowhere to help rescue Sookie from the infected vamps—was such a hectic mess, and carried so little dramatic weight, that the only real emotion came from the slow, mournful version of Steely Dan’s “Fire in the Hole” that played under the closing credits.

Series premiere talkback: 'The Strain' - 'Night Zero'

What did everybody think of FX's new vampire series from Guillermo del Toro and friends?

I posted my review of FX's "The Strain" on Friday. Now it's your turn. For those who turned into FX's first-ever Sunday night drama, what did you think? Did you find the vampire makeup and special effects creepy, or just as silly as Corey Stoll's wig? Were you interested in the characters and/or the story of this takeover plot? How did you feel about old Abraham Setrakian's way of caring for his "wife"? Was the whole thing scary or too cheesey? And will you watch again?

Have at it. I don't plan to cover this show weekly (too many things on Sunday nights), but I'll try to check in from time to time, depending on what's happening on the show.

Nicole and Derrick face some tough choices and Devin prepares to fight

When we left things on Thursday, Nicole and Derrick had just won Head of Household, which made me somewhat happy, because I like Nicole and I'm fine with Derrick and I was honestly going to be satisfied with ANYBODY being HoH, since Devin couldn't win and everybody is planning to target Devin, at least until they abandon that plan in a moment of suspicious or just-plain-silly strategy.

But who's going up on the Block tonight? And then who's going OFF the Block tonight?

Press tour: 'Constantine' hires Angelica Celaya to replace Lucy Griffiths

How NBC's adaptation of the 'Hellblazer' comics is already being tweaked

TV pilot production is an inexact science. Certain characters or ideas don't quite click, so you change them, or you abandon them, and then you move on. In these days of leaner budgets, though, it's trickier to deal with the changes as thoroughly as might be ideal, which is why much of NBC's press tour session for "Constantine" was devoted to a character who now won't be in the show past the pilot.

Press Tour: Emmy chief will look at category problem, do nothing

We care more about category fraud and blurred lines than the TV Academy

NBC's press tour panel for the 2014 Emmy telecast was a chance for Seth Meyers and his "Late Night" producer Mike Shoemaker to talk about their approach to Seth hosting the show. Mainly, though, it was an opportunity for TV critics to complain to Television Academy chairman Bruce Rosenblum about the broken Emmy category system — and for Rosenblum to smile, talk about his desire to examine the problem, and then make clear that he has no real plans to do anything to fix it.
