Series premiere talkback: 'About A Boy'

What did everybody think of the TV version of the Nick Hornby book and Hugh Grant movie?

I published my review of NBC's "About A Boy" on Thursday. Now it's your turn. For those who tuned in tonight for the special post-Olympics preview, what did you think? If you're a fan of the book or movie, did you like seeing most of the events compressed into a half-hour episode? If you're new to these characters and this story, how did it play to you? Do you like David Walton? Minnie Driver? Young Benjamin Stockham? Given how much ground the pilot covered, do you feel like there's more story to tell in later episodes? And will you watch again when the show settles in on Tuesdays at 9?

Have at it.

That 'Heroes' reboot you never wanted is coming to NBC in 2015

'Heroes Reborn' will bring back original creator Tim Kring, for reasons unknown

There is nostalgia, there is thinking outside the box, and then there is NBC's hilariously ill-conceived plan to bring "Heroes" back from the dead for a new miniseries to air sometime next year.

10 Oscar Nominees we'd like to see host 'Saturday Night Live'

Will Amy Adams, Pharrell Williams or Sandra Bullock appear anytime soon?

Oscar excitement is starting to reach fever pitch. But while HitFix’s staff has nearly every aspect of the lead up to the awards themselves covered, it’s time to also think about what will happen after the statues are handed out on March 2. Sure, many of the nominees will move onto other film projects. But there’s also another place we’d like to see them sooner rather than later: in Studio 8H hosting “Saturday Night Live.” All these selections are long shots in one way or another. But these choices aren’t about the likelihood of any one performer actually hosting. This is about looking at the field of 2014 nominees and seeing where the most interesting pairings between host and show exist.

Ryan Seacrest, Harry Connick Jr. talk on the 'American Idol' Top 13 blue carpet

Ryan Seacrest, Harry Connick Jr. talk on the 'American Idol' Top 13 blue carpet

Randy Jackson also discusses his new mentor role
On Thursday (February 20) night, as soon as I finished recapping the "American Idol" Top 13 results, I rushed up to Fig & Olive in Beverly Hills for the season's Top 13 party.

On the traditional blue carpet, I talked with all 13 of the finalists, 12 of the 13 in 1-on-1 interviews, about they challenges they're going to face this season and the challenges they've already faced. [Special kudos to Team HitFix's daring cameraman for braving the blue carpet's strange and erratic lighting system.]

In addition, many of the show's decision-making bigwigs came and talked to reporters in groups of four or five. We got host Ryan Seacrest, who I asked about the season's more substantive judging panel, and mentor Randy Jackson, who I asked about the itch of watching "Idol" performances without judging for the first time. We also got Harry Connick Jr., who I asked about raising the level of the discourse on the judging panel. [Keith Urban's few minutes fell victim to the problematic lighting, while Jennifer Lopez whizzed by my side of the carpet like she was a speed skater.]

Check out highlights from those three interviews above.

Stay tuned for my Top 13 interviews before next Wednesday's show!

TV Ratings: Olympics coverage hits Sochi lows for NBC Friday

'Shark Tank' returns to help ABC to second in the demo
Fast National ratings for Friday, February 21, 2014.

Anchored by 18-year-old American Mikaela Shiffrin's slalom win, NBC's Olympics coverage still dominated Friday night, albeit with the lowest primetime numbers from Sochi.

ABC aired the only other new primetime programming and got good numbers for a new episode of "Shark Tank," helping the network finish second among young viewers. CBS was second overall with three repeats of "Blue Bloods."

On to the numbers...

Ryan Seacrest-produced drama won't begin production til next year
With the other networks looking at pilots and straight-to-series orders for the 2014-2015 season, NBC is shifting the conversation in an unexpected direction, ordering a straight-to-series drama for the 2015-2016 season.

Yes. That's not this fall, but next season. What makes NBC so confident and forward-looking? Only Jenny From the Block.

On Friday (February 21) night, 11:30 p.m. on the East Coast in fact, NBC announced that it has given a 13-episode order to "Shades of Blue," a drama executive produced by and starring Jennifer Lopez.

'Dancing with the Stars' dumps Brooke Burke-Charvet -- she calls it a 'shocking elimination'

"Dancing with the Stars" dumps Brooke Burke-Charvet -- she calls it a "shocking elimination"

Burke-Charvet didn't know her co-hosting job was in limbo until ABC told her this afternoon she was not coming back. "I have enjoyed seven seasons co-hosting DWTS but understand the need for change considering the position of the show at this juncture," she tells E! in a statement. "I've always been one to embrace change and looking forward to pursuing opportunities I previously wasn't able to entertain because of contractual obligations to the show. I've seen my fair share of shocking eliminations in the ballroom but this one takes the cake."

Heroes vs. Villains: What would you call Snake Plissken?

Time to vote on John Carpenter's most iconic anti-hero

The NCAA basketball tournaments are less than a month away. Because it's obviously never been done before, HitFix is going to host its own tournament, but this battle won't take place between teams on Tobacco Road. We've got something more exciting in mind.  In our competition, the greatest Heroes from the worlds of television and movies will face off versus the greatest Villains.

The committee is currently mulling over the brackets, but we need your help.  There are six characters who some would consider anti-heroes, but we know then need to part of the battle royale. Do they fall in the Heroes bracket or the Villains bracket?

You decide.  You have 48 hours. Choose wisely.

Halloween, 1981. Chattanooga, Tennessee.

An eleven-year-old kid spent weeks putting together a meticulously detailed costume with an eyepatch, guns, sleeveless shirt, and a leather jacket, and headed out with three of his friends to make the house-to-house rounds in a suburban neighborhood called Mountain Shadows. He was thrilled to be dressed as Snake Plissken, the main character in John Carpenter's "Escape From New York," and thrilled to see people's reactions to the costume.
