Press Tour: Christina Applegate and Maya Rudolph stay 'Up All Night'

Rudolph talks about her Oprah-inspired, reshot role

One corner of prime time will be all about baby business starting Wed. Sept. 14 at 10 p.m., when 'Up All Night' starring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett debuts on NBC. Although the presence of a newborn on a sitcom used to be either a season finale plot point before the kid was shuffled off-stage or the mark of a show jumping the shark (sorry, "The Office"), this series puts new parenthood and a screaming, pooping baby front and center.

Happy Monday, Boys & Girls. It's Firewall & Iceberg Podcast time, doncha know.

We're at the Television Critics Association press tour, so that's what most of our conversation is about this week, but we also reviewed IFC's "Whisker Wars," chattered about this week's "Breaking Bad" and, after a week off, discussed the first season finale of "Twin Peaks."

The Afternoon Read: Will we see 'Doctor Strange' in theaters in 2013?

Plus Lars Von Trier plans to get even more graphic with 'Nymphomaniac'

Welcome to The Afternoon Read.

What a morning.  I've already suffered one heartbreak today, and I'm not even done with my e-mail.  I can't believe it's already August.  Hopefully you guys checked out The Travis McGee Book Club this morning, which was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon here at the house.  There's so much going on this morning that it's worth diving right in to share it all with you.

For example, I love that Twitch has been giving the trades fits lately by publishing scoops before the trades can.  There have been a few public fits as a result, and the response from Twitch has just been to get better and better and to publish more.  Today's story about the possibility of a "Doctor Strange" film in 2013 from Marvel is an exciting one.  Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer have evidently turned in a draft of the film that has gotten Marvel confident enough to now go out and pick a director for the film.  I love "Doctor Strange" precisely because it's so weird to see them drag magic and demons and other realms into the "reality" of the Marvel Universe.  And since this will be one of the Marvel Studios movies, expect to see the character layered into the exact same cinematic world that the Avengers already inhabit.  There have also been rumbles lately that "Ant-Man" is finally picking up steam, with Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish still attached as writers.

Katy Perry zooms past Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga to set a new record

What Billboard chart record did she set now?

Katy Perry has gone where no other act has gone:  As “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” rises to the top of Billboard’s Mainstream Top 40 chart, her album “Teenage Dream” becomes the only album in the chart’s 19-year-history to feature five No. 1s.

“Last Friday Night” follows “California Gurls” featuring Snoop Dogg, “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,”  and “E.T.” featuring Kayne West to the top, according to Billboard.

She surpasses Justin Timberlake’s “FutureSex/LoveSounds” and Lady Gaga’s “The Fame,” both of which took four songs to the top of the Mainstream Top 40 chart.

“Last Friday Night” also set a record for the most weekly plays in the chart’s history, zooming past the previous record holder, her own “E.T.”  That makes it a pretty good week for Perry, who also appears in the new "Smurfs" movie, which kicked Smurf butt at the box office this weekend.

Of course the real record that Perry is going for is to go to the top of Billboard’s Hot 100. In doing so, “Teenage Dream” would join Michael Jackson’s “Bad”  as the only two albums in the Hot 100’s 53-year history to produce five charttoppers. If that happens, we can be assured that we’ll see another single from “Teenage Dream” in an effort to break the tie.

UPDATE: Perry has now also set the same record on Billboard's Pop Songs chart as "Last Friday Night" assumes the summit there as well.

Kings of Leon cancel remainder of U.S. tour citing 'exhaustion and vocal issues'

More than 25 dates will not be rescheduled

The Kings of Leon have canceled the remainder of their U.S. tour citing vocal issues and exhausting for lead singer Caleb Followill. The dates will not be rescheduled. The family band had more than 25 dates still to go on this swing, primarily on the east coast. Other band members are strongly hinting that there are other issues contributing to the group's woes.

Dan and I thought we might have time to do a Firewall & Iceberg Podcast midway through the first week of press tour, but things didn't work out that way. Instead, get ready for a packed edition in which we break down the most memorable cable and PBS panels, discuss the "Twin Peaks" season 1 finale, the latest "Breaking Bad" and review a show with a subject near and dear to Dan's heart in IFC's "Whisker Wars." The rundown:

"Whisker Wars" 01:45 - 11:20
Television Critics Association Press Tour - 11:25 - 53:50
"Twin Peak" - 53:50 - 01:02:45

Press tour: How much Showtime can Robert Greenblatt bring to NBC?

If 'Dexter' wouldn't work on a broadcast network, what will?

"I certainly don't want to turn NBC into Showtime," Robert Greenblatt explained at his first press tour session as chairman of NBC entertainment.

This may be disappointing news to those hoping that the man responsible for "Dexter," "Nurse Jackie" and much of Showtime's Emmy-baiting slate of shows would be attempting to turn NBC into the world's most prominent cable channel.

(Fienberg's live-blog has more details on all that Greenblatt said.)

Press Tour '11 Live-Blog: NBC Executive Session

Robert Greenblatt meets the press in his new job

When the Television Critics Association met with NBC back in January, Robert Greenblatt had yet to be formally installed as NBC Entertainment Chairman, which left us with an executive-free press tour session.

Monday (Aug. 1) morning represents Greenblatt's first time meeting with us in his current job, but he has many years of Showtime panels under his belt. That makes him far better prepared to illuminate NBC's ongoing difficulties for reporters than several of his less media-savvy predecessors.

Let's see if it makes a difference as Greenblatt sits down to chat about subjects inevitably including "The Voice," "Playboy Club" controversies and the evergreen topic of Jay Leno.

'Curb Your Enthusiasm' - 'The Smiley Face': Dog days are over :)

Larry runs into a bunch of eating-related difficulties

Last night's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" wasn't one of the ones HBO sent out in advance of the season, so I watched it this morning on HBO Go while getting ready for the start of NBC's press tour day. A few quick thoughts coming up just as soon as I seem lugubrious...

Drake

Listen: Drake has had it on 'Headlines'

Stevie Wonder gets a major assist on Drake's next album

Drake is officially over it. If last year’s “Over” showed his weariness of his burgeoning fame, on new single “Headlines,” he’s had it with the industry and many of the faux rappers that pretend they are  in the same league as his greatness.

He talks about how empty all of this feels to him, and yet, heavy is the head that wears the throne, there’s just simply no one who can do what he does. It’s a curse.

On “Headlines,” he weaves his sleepy raps around string lines for a fairly static, but oddly compelling, tune.  He made us laugh with this rhyme: “Listen to you expressin’ all these feelings, soap opera rappers, all these  n****** sound like ‘All My Children. if that’s who you think is coming about to make a killing, i guess it really is me, myself and all my millions.”
