Edward Norton puts Hulk's fate in the hands of the fans at SXSW

Louis Leterrier and Edward Norton's take on "The Incredible Hulk" came after Ang Lee's mega-budget daddy-issue take on the character flamed out both critically and commercially, and there was a chance for Leterrier and Norton to completely redeem one of Marvel's most iconic properties with their film.  Internal editorial struggles hobbled the release version of the film, though, and whatever you think of the final movie, it's not what the star thought he was making as he worked on it.

As a result, his continued involvement in the Marvel Universe has been a question mark that has plagued fandom now for a few years, especially as Marvel has started taking more and more concrete steps towards the endgame of "The Avengers."  Even when the question came up about whether or not Edward Norton would represent the Hulk part of the "Avenger" equation during a recent Marvel set visit, it was neatly sidestepped by Kevin Feige.

When I sat down with Tim Blake Nelson and Edward Norton to discuss their new collaboration "Leaves Of Grass," we had a free-ranging conversation that was terribly enjoyable, and it was only when we stood up to leave that I finally broached the "Hulk" subject with Norton.  Part of me suspected that he would dodge the query or defer it, which is why I left it to the end.  Surprisingly, Norton seemed more than willing to discuss it, and his answers were to-the-point and more optimistic than I would have imagined.

"It's really up to you guys," he told me at one point, and by "you guys," he was referring to fans and the fan press in particular.  "Is it important to you?  Does that continuity matter?"  The answer seems to me to be yes, it does matter to people, and there's something appealing about the notion of Edward Norton, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Hemsworth together.  That's chemistry I'd like to see.  Downey's hyper-confident Tony Stark would make an excellent foil for Norton's twitchy energy as the haunted Banner.

There's some simmering resentment still there for Norton, though.  When he talks about the character, there is a visible love for the full history of Hulk and Marvel Comics that isn't just an actor selling a film.  He's a genuine fan, and he has ambitions still regarding the character and what he could do with it.  But if Marvel really wants to win Norton back as a public cheerleader for the company and the character, the first step would be allowing him to restore the full 2-hour-20-minute version that Norton and Leterrier wanted to release.  If they put that movie out on BluRay and DVD, I think Norton would get much more likely to sign on.  His frustration over the way running time became a battleground on his film the same year that "The Dark Knight" became a phenomenon makes perfect sense, and I think it would be great to see all the other Marvel references (like the entire Super Soldier project subplot) layered back in.

I took some heat in e-mail and here on our comments section for my recent piece about what I saw as fanboy whining over the Captain America casting process, and I want to clarify something... I don't think fandom is a bad thing.  I think it is the thermometer by which we measure the passion for various properties or characters, and that's a great thing.  I also think fandom, when focused, can be an incredibly valuable force in the process, and this is one of those times.  I think it becomes "whining" when you're second-guessing something you can't accurately judge because you haven't see the materials, when you don't know how an audition went, or when you simply leap to a conclusion from an emotional place.  In the case of Norton's Banner, you already have some sense of what he brings to the role.  The real question now is, "Do you consider him a piece of the puzzle, and do you want him back?"  If the answer is yes, then I think it's time to clearly communicate that to Marvel.  There is ongoing interest in Norton's take on things, and any reference to him returning becomes a major conversation, and I hope Marvel pays attention to all of that energy being spent.  I think it's really Marvel's decision at this point, not Norton's, and Marvel will make it a priority if they are told, loud and clear, "This is a priority."  They could easily write around Norton or replace him, but I think that would be a creative misstep.  When you have a collaborator who is this smart, and this willing, you shouldn't walk away.  You should embrace them, even if that means doing some difficult things and making some choices that cede some power.  Marvel is being incredibly smart about the films they control these days, and they have a chance to line up a truly great cast when the Avengers assemble.

Here's hoping fandom sends the right message, and that Marvel really is listening.

damned-dirty-ape I really hope that Marvel take the step mentioned in the article and extend the olive branch to Norton as his performance in the Incredible Hulk was excellent. I doubt it will happen as Marvel aren't well known for throwing the cash at actors, no matter how good they are.

    psykomyko Dear Marvel:
Edward Norton as the Hulk IS A PRIORITY. Period.
Every Marvel fan wants to see the complete cut of THE INCREDIBLE HULK. This is a no-brainer!

stormshadow4life i LOVED Norton's Hulk. I knew their was in-fighting, but didn't know what it was about. I'd love to see the 2 hour 20 minute version.....and if they do actually make The Avengers, it would be horrible if Norton wasn't involved

McNulty I've never been a big fan of Hulk on film in general as I still don't think CGI is at a point where I can be convinced that big green thing is real, however, maybe Avatar has changed that. Aside from that I though when Norton was Norton onscreen he was pretty much perfect. I would also love to see Norton and Leterrier's cut released on Bluray in as a special edition/directors cut. I have not nor do I ever feel the need to own the theatrical cut but my undieing faith in Norton would prompt me to go out of my way and buy the extended cut.

McNulty Oh and if Norton does reprise the role for the Avengers movie that just amps up the pressure on whoever plays 'Cap'. I'm absolutely dieing to see Norton and RDJ playing off each other, honestly at some point they must do an Ironman v. Hulk movie with just the two of them duke-ing it out.

Trekscribbler I loved Norton's theatrical release of the HULK, and I'd happily pay for the double-dip. Count me in ... and, for the record, I usually hate the Marvel properties, but HULK worked for me.

blackbird I thoroughly enjoyed the film as released, but I think we'd all love to see the restored cut on BluRay and DVD; for that matter, is there any chance of limited theatrical re-release (not just of Hulk, but of IM, IM2, Thor and Cap) in the build-up to May 4 2012?

In any case, Norton was perfect as Banner, and that continuity really does matter to us. If people at Marvel are gauging fan interest, if they're paying any attention at all to what we have to say, they should hear this. Drew summed it up perfectly: "When you have a collaborator who is this smart, and this willing, you shouldn't walk away. You should embrace them..." Please, Marvel, bring Edward Norton back as Bruce Banner!

    BugKiller Drew,

As others have said, I would HAPPILY double dip (unlike with Warner's shitty release of the theatrical LOTR on blu) for Hulk 1.5 or whatever they want to call it.

Marvel really stepped on their cranks with holding firm on a running time at the expense of story only to see an almost 3 hour Batman film become the third biggest film (now) in history.

Like Norton, I'm beyond pissed that the Doc Sampson stuff was cut from the film, ESPECIALLY now that Ty Burrell has become such a revelation on Modern Family.

Please, YOU need to be the one to pass on to Norton and Marvel that not only is it important that Norton come back, but also having William Hurt return is a must, either in a further sequel or really, in The Avengers.

I'm a DC guy because of the iconic characters (especially Hal Jordan), but I can appreciate great storytelling from Marvel. Part of great storytelling in film are those who perform, and with Norton, Marvel has one of the best performers ever.

They better not fuck this up.

evan MARVEL ought to know better than to ignore what worked about THE INCREDIBLE HULK and leave Norton behind, and if they don't then I hope that Jon Favreau will tell them so. Wherever that movie went wrong, it wasn't with bringing on Edward Norton. The casting of Norton as Bruce Banner was as equally right for them as Downey was for IRON MAN. Edward Norton brought all of the right qualities to the table for that project and that character, and they wouldn't find a better actor or a more invested collaborator in bringing THE AVENGERS together and making it something that lives up to everything it can be. MARVEL has already "stepped on their cranks (as BugKiller said it) when they put the cart ahead of the horse by casting IRON MAN without the right collaboration, leading to the creative friction with Terrence Howard that recast a key character in that story's continuity and the continuity of the universe they are determined to build for the first time onscreen. They've treaded on their own continuity, and the suspension of disbelief that is so important to the stories they're telling by taking the audience out of the experience when they see IRON MAN 2 for the first time, but that character's impact on THE AVENGERS will be minimal if anything. Recasting one of The Avengers themselves is different -- especially when they did it as right as they did when they cast THE INCREDIBLE HULK.

  • I am a sucker for extended versions (I love to see what they took out and try to figure out the whys and wherefores of the internal workings of the movie, be it storytelling or studio policy wise), so yes, count me in for an INCREDIBLE HULK double-dip.

As for Norton retaining the Bruce Banner mantle, sure, I am all for it, too, but, please, could we trade Liv Tyler for Jennifer Connelly again? Please? Not only is she waaaaay above Tyler as an actress, but she has to be one of the most beautiful, mesmerizing women populating the screens.

Reno I want to see the extended version of Incredible Hulk, and I would be pleased to see Norton return for Avengers, Hulk 2 or some other part in Marvel's movie-universe stuff. I don't feel like rallying to Norton as Banner as some sort of cause, partly because I was pretty happy with Bana as Banner. I don't think Eric was responsible for any of the troublesome parts of Lee's Hulk. Norton may have been in a slightly better movie, but I don't know that he was any better than Bana. Maybe Norton brought more to it than we saw in the short cut, but I thought both were good, but neither owned the part the way Downey owned Iron Man. Basically I know Norton is replaceable because someone else already did a decent job with the character. I know Downey can't be replaced, but I think you could go almost any direction with the Banner character. I'm not even sure we'd see much Banner in an Avengers movie. If Marvel brought Bana or some other decent actor into Avengers, I'd be fine with it. I like Norton, but he has no ownership on Hulk/Banner in my mind.

  • I thought The Incredible Hulk was a pretty damn solid movie as it is, and don't really understand the ire that's directed towards it. I'd love to see Norton's version, though - it seems like a no-brainer to release an extended version of TIH around the time Iron Man 2 or Thor comes out.

And yes, it IS important that he be allowed to develop the character he originated in that film. If Marvel gives a damn about its Avengers project, they owe it to the fans and Norton to bring him in on it.

briguyx Right now the only message fandom should be sending Marvel is what a horrible choice Channing Tatum is for Captain America!

blackbird briguyx is right on the money. Downey is perfect, Norton was spot-on, and I have faith that Hemsworth will work as Thor... but Channing Tatum as Captain America? Really? A trainer can pack muscle on anyone... can we please get a solid actor for the part of Steve Rogers? Warmth, conviction, decency and a commanding PRESENCE. Tatum is bland. Watching this revolving door of contenders is tying my stomach in knots.

All of which brings us back to how much we fans really do care about this Marvel Cinematic Universe. More Norton, more Hulk, please.

John W I'm still waiting for someone to adapt the Hulk comic book, because so far all they've done is adapt the Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno television show.

I wasn't a huge fan of either film, however of the two, Norton's version of the Hulk was a lot more palatable than Ang Lee's.

Norton is a decent actor so having him for the Avengers movie, assuming it ever gets made, would be a plus in my opinion.

Yes, it is important to retain him, and his quality, for The Avengers.

  • YES! The Incredible Hulk was an awesome movie. And I keep hoping and waiting for a sequel. I want to see another Hulk movie, besides him just being in The Avengers. And it has to be Norton, if it's any other actor then I'm not interested. And even though I own The Incredible Hulk on dvd already I would gladly pay for the longer version on blu-ray! Come on Marvel, get with the program!!

KISSman I absolutely want Norton back as The Hulk. The movie was good and he's the perfect Banner. As for this Captain America whining, you're just so wrong about that. These actors they are floating out there simply don't pass the sniff test the way that Norton, Bale, and Downey Jr. did at this very same point.

  • Yes, I loved Norton's Incredible Hulk. Thought it was every bit as good as Iron Man. It's a terrible shame that it didn't do better, but I think that's mostly because most non-fans were jaded about the character after Ang Lee's melodramatic version. And so what if Norton and Marvel had disagreements. That happens. It still worked. So yes please to Hulk 2, and yes please to Norton/Hulk appearing in other Marvel movies. He's worth the price.

Hulkman I too await the sequel, and found Norton's take on Banner to have fused both the TV/Comics version(s) of the character.
Here's hoping that Marvel/Norton can set aside any creative differences and re-join for Hulk 2, The Avengers, Captain America, etc. I mean what fan-boy doesn't want to see a live action battle betwixt Hulk/Iron-Man, Thor, et al.

And the only reason I am posting is in hopes that you talk to someone one day and can pass along the message that, yeah, people do want Norton back, the fans are responding. I hated Hulk. • Edward Norton is one of the greatest actors of the new era in filmmaking. Movies like Primal Fear, The 25th Hour, and of course, American History X, are proof that the man is one of the best. Marvel should apologize to him and ask him to come back for another opportunity to bring Hulk to life. The Avengers won't be as good without Hulk and Hulk won't be as good without Norton.

Playhouse Marvel should release a Director's Cut version if only as ramp up to 'The Avengers'. The film did okay in theaters and fairly well on DVD. I think having a Special Edition would add some nice extra coin to the coffers as well as rebuild interest in the character.

Plus, it would go a long way toward repairing the bridge between Norton and Marvel. Feige and Marvel have to be keen to the fact that the fans want Norton back. He's asked about nearly every time plans for 'The Avengers' have been discussed. We keep voicing that opinion and they allow the Special Edition release of the movie on DVD/BD and I think Norton would jump at the chance to participate.
