Did we just experience the greatest awards show program this century? From Amy Poehler and Tina Fey's hilarious opening monologue to nary a weak speech among the winners, the 70th Golden Globe Awards was three hours of (mostly) well paced drama that miraculously fit around a now legendary speech from Jodie Foster that many in Hollywood will still be thinking about when they wake up Monday morning. This is where live television excels as a medium and, no joke, we have the HFPA to thank for it.
But, no, it wasn't perfect.
Taking all that into account, here are the best and worst of the HFPA's stellar night according to HitFix's Chris Eggersten, Daniel Fienberg and myself.

JJ1 I don't really get it. I respect his talent so much. He shows up. But then he does that onscreen and in interviews, as well. I would hate to think that he could be losing votes because of his onscreen demeanor; even if he's actually in a good mood.
January 14, 2013 at 9:38AM ESTdezbot He probably thought they were being disrespectful to the actors. Or, like me, he thought it wasn't that funny :-)

January 14, 2013 at 9:17AM EST Reply to CommentThis was the most fun awards show I can remember, in no small part because of Tina and Amy. Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell were hilarious too.
Jodie Foster's speech was brilliant, moving, funny, although confusing at times too.
JJ1 Ditto

January 14, 2013 at 1:12PM EST Reply to CommentIt was not that great at all. Pretty damn forgettable in fact. Jodie Foster and Will Ferrel/ Kristen Wig. Everything else was sometimes bland sometimes awkward.

January 14, 2013 at 1:14PM EST Reply to CommentNon-PBS network TV not winning a single Golden Globe was a Best for me, personally.
dan Son of Mecha Mummy - It was meant more as a "worst" from their perspective. It doesn't impact me negatively all that much. But it looks bad for them... And we needed more "Worsts."

January 14, 2013 at 2:07PM EST Reply to CommentI assume I am in the minority here but I was not that impressed with Tina and Amy. Perhaps I just dont get that type of humor as I don't watch 30 Rock or Parks. Also, outside of the opening monologue I don't really remember them doing or saying much anyway?
Stormshadow4life But isn't that how the GG's usually are? The hosts get a lot of time in the beginning....then they basically disappear. At least according to my memory, that's how it's been for years (and I am not saying I like it that way...but it's not anything you can blame on Tina and Amy).

January 14, 2013 at 4:30PM EST Reply to CommentReally surprised about all the love. It was fine, I guess, but what made it so exemplary? As long as the producers rush these awards shows through and rudely play music to toss winners off stage, I honestly could never say, unreservedly, that it was a success.
