We're halfway there.  Well, we're halfway there as of Thursday morning.

Seth MacFarlane and Emma "already hunting for an Oscar" Stone will announce the nominations for the 85th Academy Awards at the crack of dawn. "Lincoln," "Zero Dark Thirty," "Les Miserables," "Life of Pi" and "Argo" should all be rewarded with a slew of nominations.  The rest?  Needless to say, there are some nervous potential nominees and consultants today.  With that in mind, Kris Tapley, Guy Lodge and I have made our final (and we mean final) nominations predictions which you can compare in the gallery story below.  Some intriguing observations:

- The only category that we all agreed on is original screenplay.
- Overall, Kris and I agreed five times.
- Overall, Kris and Guy agreed three times.
- Guy and I agreed only once (original screenplay).
- Kris and I believe there will be ten nominees for best picture.
- Guy believes there will be eight nominees.
- I'm somewhat biased that "Cloud Atlas" will receive more nominations than Kris or Guy.
- Guy is somewhat biased that "The Master will receive more nominations than Kris or I.

Look for complete coverage of the 2012 Oscar Nominations all day long on HitFix and In Contention.

Cloud Atlas if, by far, the best edited film of the year. If the Oscars don't recognize, it would be a shame.

And Guy Lodge's predictions for Original Song are a bit weird. Doubt it's gonna pan out that way.

Ricardo Just one more thing... XD

How is Leonardo DiCaprio not winning every possible award with that movie? I haven't seen it yet and I'm not speaking about its quality but from what I've heard about the role, the Tarantino effect and DiCaprio's pedigree, I find it unbelievable that it could miss a nomination.

Agreed. WTF? I've seen it and he gives far and away the best performance in the film. Waltz is good, but he's not stretching. at all Jackson is entertaining but nearly an SNL sketch is some scenes.

That, coupled with Dicaprio's too-many snubs and the fact that the category's other heavy (Jones) is essentially playing himself and it astounds me that critics havn't been awarding him.

I get the feeling that the Academy still views him as a pretty boy young'un. And that, above all, has to stand as the Academy's most egregious bias year in and year out. Fassbender, Gosling, Dicaprio, Garfield...all a victim of this.

Edwin I actually wasn't blown away by DiCaprio's performance, but then again, my opinion may not count for much in this case because I've very rarely been thoroughly impressed by DiCaprio. I don't dislike him, but he's just never struck me as a truly great actor. Plus I didn't really like "Django" overall, so again, my opinion might not mean much in this case.

DylanS Yeah, I think the guild omissions are going to put it in that BP or nothing position. Some are thinking score, but it seems way too outside of the branch's comfort zone to get in. And I think it will miss with adapted screenplay.

    FYC: Mirrior/Mirrior

I don't think all three indie darlings get in for Best Actress like Guy thinks. I'm guessing Naomi Watts keeps one of them out. Maybe two if they go with Mirren or there's a left field nomination like Keira Knightley randomly getting in or something.
I also keep thinking there will be a surprise in Best Actor. On top of Joaquin, I think one other of the assumed nominees gets the "Wow! Can you believe Jackman/Cooper/Hawkes/Washington was snubbed?" and someone random gets the shocking nomination of the day. Maybe Gere or Affleck. I also have a weird gut feeling Dwight Henry somehow sneaks in to Supporting Actor though that category has so many potential nominees it'd be crazy if he actually got in.

I'll stay away from the big movie wars, but one item really stood out for me. None of you predicted "Still Alive" for best original song. I don't know that it will win given Suddenly and Skyfall, but it is a beautifully written song with great lyrics ... truly unusual for Oscar nominated songs. Amazing that we have three this year. Plus fun hum along songs from Brave and Hobbit.

Best prediction: From Guy, Best Song, The Sambola from Damsels in Distress.

    Here's my noteworthy predictions:
    1. Q. Wallis for Best Actress
    2. Django Unchained--will not be nominated as much as predicted.
    3. Maggie Smith fr. Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Would love to happen: Both Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman gets nominated--if only because AUSTRALIA is the best, most UNDERRATED, ROBBED movie evah. Would love to see them on the stage together.

CaptainCanada I saw that too. While it's not really that notable as a piece of music, I'd be tickled if it was nominated.

The dream would be if it then got a really dynamic staging at the Oscars and actually became an international dance craze like Violet wanted.

Regarding Best Supporting Actor, I predict that the only way there's going to be any kind of race there is if DiCaprio gets in. Any other configuration will be an easy win for Jones; frankly, that could easily happen if DiCaprio does get in. But none of the other potential nominees strike me as likely to catch fire, for a variety of reasons relating to their careers and/or films.

Edwin I know it's not all a game of statistics, but history would definitely be against that. No actor has ever won an Oscar in any category after being snubbed by SAG, BAFTA, and BFCA. It's just not going to happen, even if he does get nominated.

For Best Song, "Skyfall" will probably win, but I'd love to see "Big Machine" get a nod from "Safety Not Guaranteed". It was a great song that came out of nowhere in the movie, and helped to transform the movie's storyline from something silly to something heartfelt.

does anyone else feel like the campaign for The Sessions has been on autopilot for a while now? I know Hawkes and Hunt are looked at as locks, but how many members are ranking them higher than 3 or 4?

HoustonRufus Yeah, I'm not sure what's happened with it. Not sure if it hasn't been getting enough traction or if the campaign has been stumbling or both. I do sense neither Hawkes or Hunt are threats for the win at this point, even if they get in. And at one point, I really felt Hawkes was in the heat of it.

Edwin I actually just decided to take Hawkes out of my final predictions to let Phoenix in, and it's for exactly the reasons you said: virtually no strong campaign, and he's not likely to get a lot of #1 votes. Phoenix will definitely get #1 votes, even if he's on less ballots overall than Hawkes. So I'm going to go out on a limb and say Hawkes gets snubbed tomorrow (which is unfortunate).

Some of the less obvious predictions I'm making:

-Bardem doesn't get nominated for Supporting Actor, but Dench gets in for Supporting Actress (mainly because she's in a weaker category this year, and she's Judi Dench).
-"The Dark Knight Rises" doesn't get a single nomination.
-John Hawkes gets snubbed and replaced by Joaquin Phoenix.

And some off-the-wall guesses that I'm not predicting but WOULD predict if I were feeling a bit more gutsy:

-"Django Unchained" gets no more than 4 nominations overall and doesn't get in for Best Picture.
-"Argo" gets at least 8 nominations, including a surprising double nomination for Supporting Actor (Arkin, of course, plus either Cranston or Goodman).
-And most unlikely of all, Jean-Louis Trintignant gets in for Best Actor.

Al The competition this year is extraordinary, any of these can easily fall to the wayside by films not even mentioned in this list, simply because there are so many worthy/ loved films in contention. First time I've ever made such a detailed prediction list, because this season (so far at least) has been a blast. Great competition.

I'm glad(?) Kris put Mirren in best actress, it probably won't happen but SAG, BAFTA, and GG nods would mean a lock in any other year.
