Weezer, Blink-182 headline free Virgin Mobile Festival
The Baltimore one-day fest also boasts Franz Ferdinand, The National, Public Enemy; costs nothing
Weezer headline the Virgin Mobile FreeFest Aug. 30
The Virgin Mobile Music Festival is going "FreeFest" this year as organizers name Weezer and Blink-182 as headliners for the Baltimore event, to take place Aug. 30.
Franz Ferdinand, Public Enemy, Jet, The National, Girl Talk, The Bravery, The Hold Steady, St. Vincent, Wale, Taking Back Sunday, Holy F*ck, Pete Tong, Danny Howells and Lee Burridge are also scheduled to perform, at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md.
Tickets, while costing nothing, will still be issued for the music festival via Ticketmaster starting with a "pre-sale" tomorrow, June 25, at 10 a.m. EST for "previous Virgin Mobile Festival ticket buyers and Virgin Mobile customers." Those who qualify should expect an email with instructions. The regular "onsale" to secure the rest of the 35,000 tickets starts Saturday.
"The move celebrates both a giveback to music fans in a bad economy as well as an effort to solicit donations to homeless youth agencies in need around the country via The RE*Generation, Virgin Mobile's charitable arm," says the Virgin Mobile release.
Ticketmaster is waiving the convenience charge "buyers" pick up their tickets at Merriweather or the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. However, those who choose to have their tickets shipped will pay a $5 Ticketmaster fee. Additionally, "To respond to the sharp decrease in national social giving, Virgin Mobile FreeFest will also host a special VIP seating area for those who donate their time to community service at designated homeless youth shelters around the country."
Last year's non-free fest was two days long and headlined with Foo Fighters, Jack Johnson, Kanye West, Nine Inch Nails and Stone Temple Pilots.
