Watch: Rye Rye, M.I.A. in 'Bang'
How does M.I.A. stack up as a video director?
Rye Rye
We saw Rye Rye during her performance at the South By Southwest Music Conference & Festival in Austin this year and, with her, on stage, were two dancers. Two dancers who exhausted themselves every 30 seconds, as the 18-year-old performer laid out tight lines and rhymes.
Watching this music video for "Bang," featuring M.I.A., its easy to see how those hoofers could fall flat on their backs. There's some quick moves down in that Baltimore club scene Rye Rye claims. And this quirky track has a pretty fast clip itself, with M.I.A. keeping her contributions to a minimum as her protege does her thing.
The video is a pretty exciting, given its simplicity: dance moves, Rye Rye (real name Ryeisha Berrain) and M.I.A. bumming on a couch and, goodness, colors, lots of colors. M.I.A. did a finer job in the music video medium than another first time video director like, say, Kanye West.
Rye Rye will be releasing her debut album via M.I.A.'s N.E.E.T. imprint (under Interscope), though who knows when -- it was originally supposed to come in March. Check her out at Lollapalooza on Aug. 7 and at the HARD Music Festival in L.A. on Aug. 8.
