Watch: New 'Scott Pilgrim vs. The World' trailer explodes on Facebook

Discover why Michael Cera might make a comeback this summer

In a Memorial Day surprise, Universal Pictures debuted the new trailer for "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" on the film's official Facebook page today. "Pigrilm" is one of the few non-franchise films to create some legitimate buzz this summer and after the worst Memorial Day weekend box office in 17 years, Hollywood could use it.

Directed by Edgar Wright ("Hot Fuzz," "Shaun of the Dead") and based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley, "Scott Pilgrim" follows the story of the title character (played by Michael Cera) who falls for the mysterious Romana Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) only to discover he must defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends to secure her love.  It seems the "Pilgrim" world is one were everyday people have powers you'd expect to see in video games.  The trailer does a great job of selling that concept by having Pilgrim grab a "life" out of thin air

The preview also gives us our first real look at Pilgrim's gay roommate Wallace Wells (Kieran Culkin who somehow doesn't appear as cute as he should), evil ex-boyriend Gideon Gordon Graves (Jason Schwartzman), eternally moody bandmate Kim Pine (Alison Pill) and a quick glimpse at groupie Knives Chau (Ellen Wong).

The biggest question mark about "Pilgrim" has been whether Cera would be able to convey the youthful enthusiasm of the character which is a bit closer to rejected, geeky frat boy than the dry sense of humor the "Superbad" star is known for.  And, considering Cera's theatrical returns lately, he could use a hit with "Pilgrim." Thankfully, the more footage fans see, the more he's slipping (somewhat) comfortably into the role.

You can watch the new preview on Facebook or, because we just couldn't help ourselves, check it out embedded on this page.  And, as always, don't be shy. Tell us what you think.

"Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" opens nationwide on August 13.

Stormshadow4life I don't think most girls are gonna go for this one. The target audience just seems to be really focused on those of us who grew up with the NES and boss battles. That said, this new trailer was MUCH better than the first and has me interested

    blue_flames "HitFix Staff" strikes again!

" ... after the world Memorial Day weekend ..." (worst?)

"... dry sense of humor the "Superbad" star is none for ..." (known?)

I *love* Drews writing but it seems like "HitFix Staff" (still) needs to do some serious levelling up of their professionalism stat.

Stormshadow4life I don't know if it was Drew here (as I usually only notice mistakes in Greg's stuff)....but yeah. This site really needs a proof reader. It should be a little embarrassing.

    • This article was written by Gregory Ellwood, through and through. Its got his stamp all over it.

      1. The reference to Box-Office. If Drew had written this, there would have been more of geekgasms than shrewd Boxoffice analyses

      2. Spelling and grammar <-- Gregory Ellwood's trademark.

      3. The comment in the parenthesis about Scott's gay roommate.

      4. The article just "feels" as if its written by him.

  • My girlfriend isn't into video games(except for some Wii sports), geek/comic movies, or a big Cera fan, but even she thinks this looks good.

  • I have to admit I was not as big a fan of the 1st trailer as many other people were. But, THIS trailer, I have to say... has won me over.

The "getting an extra life" joke was priceless, so were the hearts around the two of them kissing and many other things... like Scott saying "So are we dating?" in the bus.

Two things that didn't work are - Michael Cera still doesn't look like the Scott Pilgrim of the comics. He just doesn't seem that brashly confident and naive guy. Also, the Amazon joke doesn't work as well in the trailer (movie?) as it did in the comic. And I blame Cera.

Mandrake1979 You Should watch Cera in Youth In Revolt. That film makes me think he will be able to nail this character.
