Jesse Eisenberg gets 'creepy' in 'The Social Network' trailer
Clip paints the 'Facebook movie' in a dramatic light
Does Facebook sometimes get a little dramatic for you? The film about Facebook's beginnings gets that way too.
"The Social Network" is due on Oct. 1, and the full trailer arrived today, featuring a somber cover of Radiohead's "Creep" by Scala and the Kolacny Brothers.
This is an improvement over previous clips in that it contains actual scenes from the David Fincher-directed flick. Jesse Eisenberg stars as the "creep" Mark Zuckerberg, planning the social network's reach to college students at Harvard, fighting with his cohorts and competitors and arriving at what should be his moment of personal victory.
As previously reported, Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor worked on the score; it co-stars Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake, as seen in the clip.
"The film's materials continue to position 'Network' as a serious drama - a battle for the control of internet riches and multimedia power," says HitFix's Greg Ellwood. "This is strange considering the early buzz from those who have seen the film - and there are few - is about how funny it is."
Guess we'll have to stay tuned to see if the next tease alludes to as much.

July 16, 2010 at 4:48AM EST Reply to CommentI love this trailer. I love this so much I could marry it. Right now.
And I really don't think this is "a battle for the control of internet riches and multimedia power", nor are the promos painting it as such. For me, this film is about a guy, a genius, who got involved in something waaaay bigger than him. How he fumbled, lost some friends, made enemies, evolved and ended up is what I hope (and think) the movie will be about. f that isn't stuff for serious drama, then I don't know what it. Look at the trailer and see how much of it is Jesse/Mark claiming ego ownership on Faceoob, how many times Garfield's character reminds him he's involved too etc. etc. Absolutely apt marketing.
That the film is extremely funny is expected (given the college setting, Mark's awkward nature and Sean Parker's character). Which is even better for the film.

July 16, 2010 at 1:26PM EST Reply to CommentI think Sorkin does his best work when he's writing about media and how it influences culture. This seems like a very natural fit for him. I read somewhere that Sorkin was going to do a TV series about the production of a Countdown-like news commentary show. I would love to see that be true.

July 16, 2010 at 10:49PM EST Reply to CommentWhy would anyone be surprised that a film written by Aaron Sorkin would be louded as both funny and dramatic? Isn't that what Sorkin does pretty much every time he puts pen to paper?
Playhouse Exactly. It's Sorkin's calling card.
