Watch: Exclusive new footage of 'SGU: Stargate Universe'
Newcomer Brian J. Smith talks about joining the new SyFy series
Brian J Smith is Lt. Matthew Scott in "SGU: Stargate Universe."
Things are turning around slowly but surely at MGM and not just on the movie side. The studio has finally given it's one true television franchise, "Stargate," a new look with "SGU: Stargate Universe."
The mighty lion, along with the show's network Sci-Fi, er, SyFy, is planning a big debut for "SGU" at this year's Comic-Con International. On Friday, at 10:30 AM in TV central (aka Ballroom 20), MGM will introduce the series new cast members including Robert Carlyle ("The Full Monty") and promises a massive amount of footage of the new series that will probably "never be shown again" (or at least until the show debuts this fall).
MGM has provided a number of websites different clips of some of the new footage and HitFix is happy to premiere a featurette centered on series newcomer (and possible breakout?) Brian J. Smith. This is the 27-year-old actor's biggest role to date and his character, Lt. Matthew Scott, appears to be key to the dramatic thrust of the series.
For more on the franchise's new direction, here's the very informative official synopsis.
SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for
themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base
comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship,
which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth. Faced
with meeting the most basic needs of food, water and air, the group must
unlock the secrets of the ship¹s Stargate to survive. The danger, adventure
and hope they find on board the Destiny will reveal the heroes and villains
among them.

"SGU: Stargate Universe" should hit SyFy sometime this October.
