After a tense 9th inning, the Philadelphia Phillies pulled out a Game Five win on Monday night, forcing the World Series to Wednesday, at least. Similarly, the World Series faced its toughest competition on Monday, actually losing overall to "Dancing with the Stars" and nearly losing in the 18-49 demo to "The Big Bang Theory."
Among adults 18-49, FOX averaged a 4.8 rating, beating CBS' 3.9 rating and the 3.0 rating for ABC in the key demographic. NBC's 2.0 rating was enough for fourth, doubling the 1.0 rating for The CW.
Overall, FOX averaged an estimated 15.53 million viewers to go with a 9.6 rating/14 share. ABC was a close second with a 9.3/14 and 14.03 million viewers on average. NBC's 7.2/11 was third, but still far better than the 3.5/5 for NBC and The CW's 1.5/2.
ABC won the 8 p.m. hour overall with a 10.5/16 for "Dancing with the Stars." FOX's World Series coverage was second with a 9.9/15, though FOX averaged more viewers (16.17 million) and won the hour with a 4.9 rating in the 18-49 demo. CBS' "How I Met Your Mother" and "Accidentally on Purpose" averaged a 5.4/8 between them for third, while NBC's "Heroes" was slightly up on the night, doing a 3.8/6. The CW's "One Tree Hill" was fifth, in line with its season averages.
"Dancing with the Stars" stayed in first place overall in the 9 p.m. hour, doing a 10.8/16 for ABC. FOX's baseball had a 9.2/14 and won the 18-49 demo with a 4.7 rating. CBS' "Two and a Half Men" and "The Big Bang Theory" had an 8.1/12 overall and "Big Bang Theory" nearly beat the World Series in the demo, doing a 4.6 rating. NBC's "Trauma" generated its highest ratings in over a month, not that anybody will notice. The CW's "Gossip Girl" was fifth with a 1.3/2.
[Note: NBC ratings are elevated by the fact that the NFL telecast between the Saints and Falcons aired on NBC affiliates in New Orleans.]
Although the baseball was still going on, FOX doesn't factor into the 10 p.m. hour, allowing CBS to win with a lackluster 8.0/13 for "CSI: Miami." Baseball also took big bite out of ABC's "Castle," which was second with a 6.5/11. NBC's "The Jay Leno Show" was third.
All ratings information comes from preliminary Fast National Nielsen data, which includes live and same-day DVR viewing. All numbers are subject to change, particularly in the case of live events.
