TV Ratings: 'The Mentalist' carries CBS to Thursday double
CBS dominates overall and even takes the 18-49 demo thanks to 'Survivor' and 'The Mentalist'
All season long, CBS' "The Mentalist" has dominated ABC's "Private Practice" overall, but lost to ABC in the 18-49 demographic, helping to maintain regular Thursday night equilibrium. On Nov. 19, though, the CBS procedural moved ahead of the ABC medical drama in the key demo, helping CBS claim the last Thursday of November Sweeps both overall and in the demo.
Among adults 18-49, CBS averaged a 3.7 rating, nipping the 3.5 rating for CBS. NBC and FOX were fourth with a 2.3 rating, while The CW trailed in the key demographic with a 1.5 rating.
Overall, CBS was in control, averaging an estimated 14.35 million viewers to go with an 8.8 rating/14 share. ABC was second with a 6.8/11 and an estimated 10.32 million viewers. FOX finished third with a 5.0/8, topping the 3.5/6 for NBC. The CW's 2.1/3 was enough for fifth.
CBS started the night in first with a 7.3/11 for "Survivor: Samoa," which also dominated the 18-49 demo with a 3.8 rating. FOX's "Bones" was second with a 6.2/10. ABC's "FlashForward" was down slightly, yet again, doing a 5.2/8 overall and a 2.4 rating in the key demo. NBC's "Community" and "Parks and Recreation" held steady. The CW's "The Vampire Diaries" had a 2.4/4 for its midseason finale, which is down from last week, though The CW emphasizes that due to sports-based preemptions in at least one major market, the numbers for "VD" will change when final figures are announced.
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" kept CBS on top at 9 p.m. with a 9.3/14. ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" was a close second overall with a 9.1/14 and won the hour in the 18-49 demo with a 5.0 rating. NBC's "The Office" and "30 Rock" had a 4.1/6 for the hour. FOX's "Fringe" had a 3.7/6 overall and was down in the 18-49 demo. The CW's "Supernatural" was up from last week, but we assume that's also a factor of the same live sporting preemptions impacting "Vampire Diaries."
In the 10 p.m. hour, CBS' "The Mentalist" had a 10.0/17 and did a 3.7 rating in the key demo. ABC's "Private Practice" had a 6.1/10 and a 3.1 rating in the demo, both down noticeably from last week. NBC's "The Jay Leno Show" outperformed last Thursday's numbers, but still settled in third.
All ratings information comes from preliminary Fast National Nielsen data, which includes live and same-day DVR viewing. All numbers are subject to change.
