TV Ratings: 'The Bachelorette' clobbers 'American Idol' on Monday
It turns out 'Idol' encores don't work, as FOX's Michael Jackson tribute lands the network in fourth
Adam Lambert of 'American Idol'
Fast National ratings for Monday, June 29, 2009.
In a true shocker, FOX finished fourth on Monday night, despite airing two hours of "American Idol."
Of course, it's not actually a true shocker. FOX was just reairing a March episode as an alleged tribute to Michael Jackson, but the first-ever "American Idol" network rebroadcast failed to generate all that much interest from viewers.
Among adults 18-49, ABC won the night with a 2.4 rating, nipping the 2.1 rating for CBS in the key demographic. NBC was third with a 1.5 rating, while FOX was fourth with 1.4 rating. The CW trailed with a 0.4 rating.
Overall, though, CBS averaged an estimated 7.38 million viewers and a 4.8 rating/8 share to eke out a victory over ABC, which had a 4.7/8. NBC was a close third with a 4.0/7. FOX was well back in fourth with a 2.7/5. The CW's 0.6/1 was fifth.
ABC began the night in first with a 5.1/9 for "The Bachelorette." CBS' "How I Met Your Mother" and "Rules of Engagement" finished second with a 3.6/6, just ahead of NBC's "Law & Order" repeat. The first hour of FOX's "American Idol" encore had a 2.8/5 for fourth (though it finished third in the 18-49 demo, beating NBC). The CW's "Gossip Girl" was fifth with a 0.6/1.
"The Bachelorette" stayed on top at 9 p.m. with the 5.6/9 for ABC. CBS' "Two and a Half Men" and "Big Bang Theory" were a close second and actually edged ABC in total viewers. NBC's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" was third with a 3.8/6, while FOX's "American Idol" slipped slightly to a 2.7/4. The CW's "One Tree Hill" was steady.
CBS moved into first in the 10 p.m. hour with a 5.4/9 for "CSI: Miami." "Dateline NBC" had a 4.6/8 overall and won the hour with a 2.1 demo rating. ABC's "Here Comes the Newlyweds" was third.
All ratings information comes from preliminary Fast National Nielsen data, which includes live and same-day DVR viewing. All numbers are subject to change.
