Around 4.2 million people tuned in last night to the season six debut of "Project Runway," giving the show its highest ratings yet and Lifetime's biggest night for a series premiere ever.

It bests the 2.9 million that greeted the start of season five, when it was still slated on Bravo.

The ascent wasn't an easy one for the reality competition. Over the past year, the Weinstein Company - parent company to Lifetime - was interlocked in a lawsuit with Bravo/NBC Universal, after negotiations to stay with the latter broke down. Its premiere was thusly delayed, but worth the wait.

"Not only has this premiere generated the series' highest rating, but the reviews have been the best we have ever received," Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company, told The Hollywood Reporter. "I was thrilled to get our friends Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Fergie, Lindsay Lohan and Diane von Furstenberg to help us launch this season, and I look forward to many more surprises in the coming months."

As reported earlier today, Fox was last night's overall ratings winner with pre-season football, with CBS behind with "Big Brother."
