Fast National ratings for Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009.
Once again, a slew of Emmy wins have failed to convert into ratings points for NBC's "30 Rock," which was comfortably down from last season's premiere (inflated by hype surrounding star Tina Fey and her Sarah Palin impersonation).
Disappointing "30 Rock" premiere aside, NBC continued not to be part of the actual Thursday night ratings race, which came down to CBS and ABC, as it always seems to.
And, as per usual, ABC won the night among adults 18-49, doing a 4.0 rating, just ahead of the 3.5 rating for CBS in the key demographic. NBC and FOX had the same 2.4 rating to tie for third. That left The CW in fifth with a solid 1.5 rating.
Overall, though, CBS averaged an estimated 13.81 million viewers in primetime to go with an 8.6 rating/14 share, expanding its margin-of-victory over ABC, which did a 7.1/12. FOX's 4.7/7 was third, topping the 3.6/6 for NBC and The CW's 2.0/3.
CBS started the night in first with a 7.1/11 for "Survivor: Samoa," which also won the hour in the 18-49 demo with a 3.5 rating. ABC's "FlashForward" was second with a 5.7/9, mostly halting its downward trending, but tying with "Bones" overall for the hour (ABC topped FOX in the 18-49 demo). NBC's "Community" and "Parks and Recreation" limped along in a distant third. The CW's "Vampire Diaries" had a 2.4/4, with an impressive 3.86 million viewers.
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" won the 9 p.m. hour for CBS with a 9.5/15. ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" hit Thursday lows with an 8.9/14, though it won the hour in the demo with a 4.9 rating. NBC was third with "The Office" (4.8/7) and "30 Rock" (3.9/6). FOX's "Fringe" had a 3.7/6, doing a 2.2 rating in the demo. And The CW's "Supernatural" is nothing is not steady, week-to-week.
"The Mentalist" completed CBS' primetime overall sweep, doing a 9.3/16. ABC's "Private Practice" was second overall with a 6.9/12 and got a tiny "Grey's Anatomy" bump to win the hour with a 3.9 demo rating. That left "The Jay Leno Show" in third.
All ratings information comes from preliminary Fast National Nielsen data, which includes live and same-day DVR viewing. All numbers are subject to change.
